Northwest’s Courtney Forner Honored for STEM Education and Innovation in Michigan

(March 15, 2024 12:34 PM ET) Courtney Forner, STEM Teacher at Northwest Early Elementary, was named MiSTEM Region 2 STEM Integration Educator of the Year by the MISTEM Network, region 2. The MiSTEM Network team in region 2 – covering southeast and southcentral Michigan announced the award for Courtney Forner and two other educators at their 5th Annual Recognition Ceremony. Awardees were selected for their commitment to cultivating a vibrant STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) ecosystem in Michigan. The event served as a closing ceremony for the 2024 STEAM Week hosted by Washtenaw Community College. “The recognition ceremony is an annual opportunity to acknowledge the key role educators and community partners in the region play in preparing students for successful STEM careers,” said Megan Schrauben, MiSTEM Network executive director. “Awardees help advance MiSTEM‘s mission to create a vibrant STEM ecosystem in our state as we empower educators and the next generation of innovators.” Educators who were nominated for the awards were required to be a full-time K-13 educator in the MiSTEM Region 2 area with at least half of their…

Miller Makes Big Jump To State Championship Wrestling Finals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 3, 2024 7:30 AM ET) Using a tape measure it is only about six feet from seventh to second place on the Michigan High School Athletic Association wrestling podium. Northwest High School sophomore Jeffrey Miller made the leap from seventh a year ago to second in wrestling. He used a combination of weightroom training and added strength to finish 47-3 and second in the state in 2024 at 144 pounds. Last year he finished seventh in Division 2 at 126 pounds – earning all-state honors as a freshman. He was the first freshman earning all-state honors for the Mounties in 15 seasons.  “I just worked in the weightroom and in the wrestling room with my teammates,” Miller said. “My workouts are cardio based with heavy days and multiple lifting days for endurance.” It certainly worked as Miller earned 10 more wins this season and gained nearly 25 more pounds – mostly muscle. He is part of a young Mountie wrestling team that is just going to get better in the coming years. “We are going to have to rely on a lot of freshmen and sophomores next year,” Miller said. “We thought this year…

Ten Jackson County Wrestlers to Earn All-State Medals

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 1, 2024 10:45 PM ET) Jeff Miller of Northwest High School will be wrestling for the school’s third consecutive state title Saturday. Miller went 3-0 on Friday in Division 2 at 144 pounds advancing to Saturday’s final. He is now 47-2 on the season  Adam Haselius won a pair of titles for the Mounties in 2022 and 2023. Miller is one of 10 Jackson County wrestlers who will stand on the podium Saturday with all-state wrestling medals.  In Division 3, Napoleon wrestlers had pretty good wrestling days as four-of-five advanced to the medal rounds. Logan Hartman (120), Carson Warner (157), Mason Roth (175), and Brady Warmer (190) were all 2-1 on the day advancing to the medal rounds Saturday. Jack Reid of Grass Lake was also 2-1 on the day at 190 pounds advancing to medal contention.  Wrestlers have to win two matches before losing two in order to advance to the medal rounds.  In Division 4, David Fielder of Hanover Horton (126), Collin Thompson of Concord (138), and Clayton Clark (157) of East Jackson all earned a pair of wins Friday.  In the girls’ division,…
