Start of Wrestling Was ‘Fluke’ for Haselius, Winning a State Title Was Not

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 13, 2022 8:00 AM) Getting into the sport of wrestling was a “fluke” according to Northwest High School wrestler Adam Haselius. Winning a Michigan High School Athletic Association state individual wrestling title a week ago was not. It took a lot of time, effort, and a year-round commitment.  Haselius finished the season with a 45-1 record and won the state title in Division 2 at Ford Field last Saturday defeating Kael Wisler of New Boston Huron 7-2 in the championship match at 189 pounds.  He became the first wrestler from NWHS to win an individual state title since Mike Leholm in 2008. The Northwest wrestler lost to Wisler in the first match of the season, but gained the upper hand over the New Boston Huron grappler midway through the season. “Losing my first match of the season was a wake up call,” Haselius said. “It helped me to focus on what the goal was for the season.” Haselius took control in the championship match against Wisler and was digging for more late in the match. “You can’t let up in a match … you have to keep grinding,” Haselius said. “It doesn’t matter what…

Two Claim State Wrestling Individual Titles From Jackson County

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 5, 2022 9:01 PM) Northwest High School wrestler Adam Haselius came into the arena during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships with a simple message. “We Are Northwest.” The junior showed what a Mountie can do, winning a state title at 189 pounds in Division 2 at Ford Field on Saturday. He was one of two area wrestlers who won state titles on Saturday.  Danni Swihart of Hanover-Horton won the first MHSAA girls’ state title for Jackson County with a victory at 135 pounds. Isabel Worthing of East Jackson finished second at 140 pounds in the girls’ tournament and Nick Marienfeld of Napoleon was runner up at 160 pounds in Division 3 Haselius earned a 7-2 win over Kael Wisler of New Boston Huron in the 189-pound final in Division 2. The two had split a pair of matches during the season. He becomes the first wrestler from NWHS to win an individual state title since Mike Leholm in 2008. Six Bowling Teams Looking for MHSAA Success on Friday

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 3, 2022 3:14 PM) Six Jackson County bowling teams will be looking for state championships at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state bowling team finals on Friday. Northwest and Grass Lake boys’ teams were regional champions a week ago. Grass Lake girls were also on the top of the podium at a regional meet last Friday. Napoleon and Vandercook Lake boys’ teams were also team qualifiers as was Lumen Christi girls. Each team will bowl eight Baker games and two individual games (by five bowlers) in the state final qualifying.  The top eight teams advance to the stepladder portion of the tournament.  Bowling starts at 8:25 a.m. on Friday at Super Bowl in Canton for Division 2, JAX 60 Recreation Center in Jackson for Division 3, and M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek.  Boys teams Division 2 – Northwest High School, regional champs Division 3 – Napoleon High School, third place at regionals Division 4 – Grass Lake High School, regional champs Vandercook Lake High School, third place at regionals Girls teams Division 4 – Grass Lake High School, regional champs Lumen Christi Catholic High School, third place at regionals
