Mitchell Goes Big for NW Basketball Despite Small Stature

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (December 17, 2023 7:30 AM ET) During a basketball game between Haslett and Northwest high schools – two undefeated teams in girls’ hoops – NWHS guard Mara Mitchell created a steal and headed full steam toward her basket. Following a crossover move leaving an opponent flat footed at midcourt, the Mounties’ guard saw a defender coming from her right side obviously ready to swat a layup attempt. Mitchell slyly switched the basketball to her left hand and extended her arm outward so the only thing the opponent swatted was air. In just four seconds Mitchell showed why she is one of the top players in the Jackson area. She can thank her brother, friends on the boys’ basketball team, and college players who frequently faced the 5-foot, 4-inch basketball player at Michigan Sports Facility – formerly the RAC. “I spend a lot of time playing against men at MSF,” Mitchell said. “My brother and his friends are not going to take it easy on me.” Mitchell has not taken it easy on female competitors for the Mounties the last three years.  Last year Northwest finished 21-3 and earned a tie for the Interstate-8 Conference title…

Elledge to Play College Soccer at Ferris State University

Northwest High School senior Morgan Elledge signed a national letter of intent to attend Ferris State University and play soccer.  The senior played two years of varsity soccer and was the team's most valuable player both seasons as well as earning all-conference conference.  Her junior year she committed to play high level soccer for the Michigan Jags U-19 Academic Team and due to spring scheduling was unable to continue playing high school soccer.
