By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Addison High School lineman Nicholas Justus is the ring leader in an offensive line that in churning up defenses in the Cascades Conference this season. Next week Justus and the Panthers will have a chance to show everyone how good they are. Addison won its fifth consecutive game – all Cascades Conference contests – improving to 5-1 on the season. The Panthers are 5-0 in the conference following a 60-6 drubbing at Vandercook Lake on Friday. Addison will face undefeated Grass Lake at home next Friday for a chance at a conference title. Five weeks ago, players and coaches would have laughed at the idea of playing for a league title. The Panthers were defeated by Britton-Deerfield to open the season. “Grass Lake is going to be a physical game … it is a matter of who punches who in the mouth first,” Justus said. “Scoring a lot of points is a matter everyone playing for one another.” Justus is part of a senior class who was introduced…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Hanover-Horton High School longtime cross country Coach Dean Blackledge said each time the Comets win an invitational or tournament, the team votes on who to give the trophy to. H-H runner Richard Haislip was a deserving candidate on Saturday at the annual Jackson Invitational at Ella Sharp Park. The Comets tied for first place in the Division 2 race with Haslett – a top program in Division 2 – and won on the tie-breaker of best sixth-man time. Haislip defeated Haslett’s sixth man by two seconds to earn the top hardware. Lumen Christi Catholic High School also won the title in the girls Division 3 race. A number of Jackson-area runners also earned medals at the three-tier invitational. Temperatures in the high 80s slowed runners Saturday morning and early afternoon. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports While most runners put an emphasis on the number of miles ran over the summer, Grass Lake High School cross country runner Kailee Sandoval spent time in the weight room. And it has paid off for the junior. Sandoval won the girls’ Division 2 race at the Springport Invitational Wednesday at Springport High School. She ran the 5,000-meter course in just under 20 minutes. She wasn’t the only winner at the annual invitational that attracts a number of Jackson County schools. Hanover-Horton easily won the Division 1 boys’ race with 24 points and Concord won the boys’ Division 3 race with 34 points. Sandoval suffered a hamstring injury during the track and field season earlier in the year. She was only able to compete in three track meets last spring. “In the back of my mind, the injury has been motivation for me,” Sandoval said. “The injury has taught me to run every race like it is your last.” Sandoval said she used weight training and…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Springport High School football player Mitch Nutt was introduced on senior night and noted he would like to go to trade school to become an electrician. The senior provided a spark for the Spartans’ offense Thursday night in an opening night win over Vandercook Lake. Electricity ultimately caused the end of the game with Springport leading 31-0 just two minutes into the second half. The game was delayed by lightning for 45 minutes, and eventually called final due to lightning in the area. The storm was expected to be in the area for another hour or so. Springport opens the season 1-0, while the Jayhawks fall to 0-1. Nutt threw for 102 yards and ran for another 86 for the Spartans. He started three games in his sophomore year but was replaced by an older, more experienced quarterback. “I have been working out a lot and working on my speed and agility,” Nutt said of the change from receiver/halfback to quarterback. “The only thing I worried about was getting…
