A different look

Vandercook Lake will need shared contributions to duplicate success from last winter   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – With the graduation of Will Rodriguez, the Vandercook Lake boys basketball team officially graduated its top offensive player.   And that is where piecing the puzzle together begins for Paul Varner as the 2015-16 season sits right around the corner.   Sam Ray, one two regular starters back in the mix, begins the season as the leading scoring from last winter.   He averaged roughly five points per game.   “It’s a new team with a new set of goals,” Varner said. “It starts with consistent scoring, and we need it from a collection of guys.”   Rodriguez averaged roughly 16 points per game to go with seven rebounds and four assists.   “I think everyone’s responsibilities have changed so much,” Varner added. “And that’s going to take some time to get comfortable and figure out. We know that.”   It’s not all doom and gloom, though, because the Jayhawks certainly return some athletic talent.   After all, this was a team that went 16-7 last year and reached the district finals before falling to Hanover-Horton, as the Comets…

Plenty accomplished

Wolvin proud of his Vandercook Lake squad after eight wins and spot in postseason  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – The loss, some five days old, still stung. Steve Wolvin wanted to be coaching football this week, not looking back on a season that was. But less than a week after falling to Lumen Christi 35-7 in a Division 6 playoff opener, the Vandercook Lake coach took a moment to reminisce about a season that was — a season of excellence. “We had a bunch of kids that came from so many different backgrounds and accomplished something here that hadn’t been done in a long, long time,” Wolvin said. “That’s what we’ll enjoy about this year.” From close calls to upside down records, the Jayhawks had knocked on the playoff door plenty of times since last making it in 1997, but the 2015 group kicked said door down. Vandercook started the season wit a 27-14 victory against Springport and never looked back, reeling off seven straight wins before falling to Manchester in Week 8. But in one of the wildest games anyone has ever seen, Vandercook capped the regular season with a 45-42 victory over Springport in which the…

Titans Come to Life

Lumen responds from early deficit, rolls to 35-7 victory over Vandercook By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – The underdogs came out swinging, a playoff team for the first time in nearly  two decades, Vandercook Lake landed the first punch.  And it was a staggering, direct hit that stung for more than a quarter. But once off the mat, Lumen Christi flexed its playoff muscle, and experience, roaring  back from an early deficit to roll to a 35-7 victory in Friday night’s Division 6 pre-district  opener on the road. “I thought they were really well prepared to start the ball game. They caught us flat  footed a little bit,” Lumen coach Herb Brogan said of Vandercook, which led 7-0 until  the final 90 seconds of the first half. “We got the ball for one series and didn’t do  anything.” After falling behind on the opening drive, Lumen scored the game’s final five  touchdowns, including three in a span of 6:15 in the fourth quarter. “We found a way to bounce back and had a great second half,” Brogan added. “It’s very tough, (the season) being over,” a somber Vandercook coach Steve Wolvin  said. “But if you’re going to lose, you…
