Winner take all

Wolvin keeping even keel as conference title hangs in the balance By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – It’s been the same approach all season long, and one that has certainly worked.  No one game has been any bigger than any other, no opponent given more attention than the next.   So would that change this week, as the Vandercook Lake football team took its undefeated record to Manchester for a winner-take-all conference finale? “No, we’re really not making a big deal about any game. Our focus is on whatever game is up next, and this happens to be next,” coach Steve Wolvin said simply. “It’s going to be exciting, and if we find a way to win, that’ll be a great thing for these kids.” His tone never changed, almost a stubborn boringness to it.   But again, if it ain’t broke… The Jayhawks enter Friday’s tilt in Manchester 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Last week’s wild 30-27 victory at Michigan Center — thanks to a blocked field goal as time expired — set up the impromptu Cascades Conference championship game with a Manchester team that started the season with a one-point loss, but hasn’t looked back…

Vandercook stays unbeaten

Jayhawks edge past Michigan Center in thriller, head to Manchester to determine Cascades Conference champ By Mike Moore Staff Writer Michigan Center – With roughly 30 seconds to play in the first half, Noah Hancock picked himself up off the turf, a badly twisted knee preventing him from getting to the sideline in any sort of quick matter, or without assistance. With exactly 30.3 seconds to play in regulation, Hancock picked a fumble off the turf, a host of defenders preventing him from running, in any matter at all. So he dove. And with that, the Vandercook Lake football team is 7-0 for the first time since 1970. “Another boring game. Another boring win,” Vandercook coach Steve Wolvin said with a rye smile moments after his guys blocked a last-second field goal and prevailed with a 30-27 victory at Michigan Center Friday night. Hancock, who was injured at the end of the first half, picked up his own fumble in the waning seconds of regulation and scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to put Vandercook up for good. Some 28 seconds later the Jayhawks blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt to preserve the victory. “I don’t think we’ve practiced as…

If it ain’t broke…

With playoff spot secure, Jayhawks seek more improvement in season’s final third By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – You would think there’d be a mini parade, a celebration to rid the mind of so many tough memories and close calls over the past 17 seasons. In fact, for a program like Vandercook Lake, that’s had a playoff ticket virtually in hand before it was whisked away, you’d even understand said celebration given the guys in red and white are 6-0 and have officially punched one of those tough-to-come-by spots for Week 10. “I think one kid brought it up last week after the game, but that was pretty much it,” coach Steve Wolvin said simply and calmly Tuesday morning while speaking about his undefeated Jayhawks. “I know this sounds boring, but once you obtain one goal, it’s time to set new ones.” So no parade? No confetti falling from the skies? “We’re excited. The playoffs are a huge deal,” Wolvin added. “But truthfully, we enjoy each game for 24 hours and then we refocus. Our attention is on Michigan Center, and nothing else.” Vandercook had come close to the postseason in the past, going 5-4 in 2014 and 2008,…

One Win Away

Vandercook wins wild one 44-26 at Grass Lake, moves to within one win of playoffs  By Mike Moore Staff Writer Grass Lake – Leading by just four in a game that had swung back and forth the entire first half, Steve Wolvin knew his Vandercook Lake football needed a spark. He didn’t know said spark would ignite fireworks for the next 24 minutes of football. “We practice it, because we know they weren’t going to kick (to our deep guys),” Wolvin said of his kick return unit, which began the second half of Friday night’s game at Grass Lake on the field and leading 18-14. When the ball sailed roughly 25 yards, Devin Cheney was right there, scooped it up, turned around and heaved it to Zaithon Allen. “It was amazing,” Allen said of what turned into a 70-plus yard touchdown return. His score put the Jayhawks up 25-14, but the dagger came 40 seconds later when Koby Bushinski picked off a Kyle Farley pass and returned it 37 yards for a 31-14 lead. Vandercook went on to win 44-26, improving to 5-0 for the first time since 1996, which also happens to be the last time the guys in…
