Vandercook to host Lumen in opening round of state playoffs Friday night By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – One program has a history of this, has made its name in the 10th week of the football season, and beyond. The other hasn’t been to this stage in nearly two decades. But on Friday night, the past of Lumen Christi and Vandercook Lake will be just that — the past. On Friday night, the Titans (6-3) make the short trip to take on Vandercook (8-1) with a certain respect of what it’s taken to get to this point, but with all focus on reaching the next. “This is a new season. This is where these kids can build their memories, one way or the other,” Lumen coach Herb Brogan said of his 2015 squad, the 18th in a row to make the postseason. “It’s in their lap now as to what they want to create in regards to their own legacy.” “All we talked to our guys about was the opportunity we have right now,” said Vandercook coach Steve Wolvin, guiding the Jayhawks to the playoffs for the first time since 1996, the same year Lumen won a Class B…

So here’s a quick look at the JTV teams headed to Week 10 and the regional they are locked into. Check back later this week to find out what games JTV will be covering. Also check back for previews of some of the first round battles. Records are followed by playoff points. Late field goal lifts Vandercook to 45-42 victory and 8-1 regular season By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – First came the family group hug, a much-needed dose of calming therapy. Then came the question about this Thursday night home game, and just what he was feeling in the moments after it ended. And with that, Steve Wolvin smiled and shrugged. What more could he do? The Vandercook Lake football coach had just endured a nearly three-hour contest with Springport, watched his defense allow more than 500 total yards of offense, give up seven touchdowns, commit seven offside penalties and surrender multiple double-digit leads. He witnessed his offense turn the ball over four times in one game after doing so twice in the previous eight. He saw a drive start at the 5-yard line with a chance to put things out of reach, and end on a 98-yard fumble recovery for touchdown going the other way. His special teams were suspect at best, allowing more than 200 return yards. And with less than a minute to play, on fourth down, he watched as his guys allowed a 10-yard completion and…
Vandercook playing for home field, Springport playing for the playoffs as two teams meet tonight By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – There’s a bit of desperation, and then there’s a whole ton of it. That about sums up tonight’s battle between the Vandercook Lake and Springport football teams. Vandercook, 7-1 and locked into a playoff spot, has a good shot at hosting an opener next week if the Jayhawks can find a way to win. Springport, 5-3 and resting squarely on the bubble, has an outside shot to make the postseason at 5-4, but is guaranteed a spot with what would likely be considered an upset on Vandercook — on the road no less. Is that enough to get excited about tonight’s Week 9 meeting? “We expect them to play like their backs are against the wall,” Jayhawks coach Steve Wolvin said. “They are going to pull out all the stops.” This isn’t the first time the teams have met in 2015. In the season opener, Vandercook took what was a 14-14 tie at halftime, and turned it into a 27-14 victory, thanks in large part to a number of defensive stops deep in its own territory in the…
