Terry Calagon named MIAA Defensive Player of the Year

Alma, Mich. - Senior defensive end Terry Calagon (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson) has been named the Defensive Player of the Year in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the league office announced today (Monday, Nov. 16). Calagon, the Scots' career leader in sacks and tackles for loss, is the first Alma College player to earn Defensive MVP honors since the MIAA began honoring offensive and defensive most valuable players in 1984. In addition, he is also the first Alma defensive player to be named the league's MVP since Rick Johnson in 1972. "Terry being the MIAA Defensive MVP is the mindset when I took over four years ago. I've always been a defensive guy, that's my background, and to build a championship starts with defense," said Head Coach Greg Pscodna.  "Alma had been known for its offense and we needed to try to change our identity and become a better defensive team, and Terry that upon himself to make himself a better defensive player. I saw that from him in high school and that's why we brought him here to Alma. Terry took it from there, and with his hard work and dedication in the offseason and being a great leader, the…

Spring Arbor captures sixth straight Crossroads League Tournament Title

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 5 ranked Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team rolled past Marian University 5-0 on Saturday to capture the 2015 Crossroads League Tournament Championship and the league’s automatic berth to the 32nd annual NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship. Four different players scored for the Cougars, including senior Nikki Bonnema who recorded two goals, to help the team claim its sixth straight tournament title. Spring Arbor had gotten off to quick starts in each of its two previous tournament matchups – scoring in under six minutes in both contests – however, would not experience the same success early on against Marian. Despite applying intense pressure and creating several scoring chances, the Knights would keep the Cougars off the board behind strong play from its goalkeeper Madeline Weber. The home team was finally able to breakthrough though in the 33rd minute when freshman Bethany Balcer blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the upper corner for her 25th goal of the season – matching the program’s single-season record. The Cougars were able to add to their lead before halftime with a goal from sophomore Renee Broekhuizen. Classmate Sarah Klunder connected with Broekhuizen on…
