City’s Stormwater System Tested with Historic Rain

Sandbags protect electrical work in progress near the Consumers Energy Innovation Center downtown. ((JTV photo) With the Grand River cresting at 15.12 feet Monday night - only four inches away from the record swell set in 1968 - Jackson engineers say they’re happy with how well the city’s stormwater system worked during the historic rain. “According to the National Weather Service, it’s the kind of rain you only see once every 50 years,” city engineer Jon Dowling said. The city of Jackson received nearly two inches of rain Friday evening in a very short amount of time, which raised the Grand River from 8.5 feet to 13 feet in only 30 minutes - a sign that Dowling said shows how well the city’s stormwater system is working. “If the stormwater system wasn’t working properly you’d see the river staying low and the streets flooded with water during a storm,” Dowling said. “Once the river is cresting at a certain point though, before it can reset, that’s when flooding can occur.” Dowling said Jackson and other city’s infrastructure isn’t built to take on as much water as it received the last four days, resulting in some flooding conditions on streets and…

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football coaches anticipate a season where any of four teams could hoist the championship trophy in November.   The result of the coaches preseason poll, released Monday by league Director of Media Relations Sheila Blackman, reports defending champion Albion College will face challenges from Adrian College, Olivet College and Trine University this fall.   Adrian, 4-2 against league rivals to finish in a tie with Trine for third place last year, was installed as the league favorite after receiving one vote to finish first, four to finish second and one to finish third for a total of 12 points.   Albion and Olivet, which shared the league title last year with 5-1 records, collected 13 points apiece. Football Preview: Jackson Vikings

Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Jackson Vikings Last season’s record: 8-3 Returning starters: 3 on offense, 5 on defense First Game: Aug. 26 vs. Coldwater   Offensive keys: Jackson’s plunge back to relevance last year was a multifaceted one, but it’s impossible not to notice what the offense did.   The team’s 436 point scored was a program record for a singles season and also more than the past three seasons (392) combined.   But the new season brings together a new collection of weapons on the offensive side of things, and for coach Scott Farley, it starts and ends up front.   “The offensive line has to come together,” the Jackson coach said. “This is a young group that really just has a few seniors in the mix. We’re young and talented, but we need some experience.”   Jackson set program records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in 2015, though the team’s biggest and most dangerous weapon remains in the backfield in senior Shonte Suddeth.   Suddeth rushed for roughly 1,300 yards in his junior season to go with 25 touchdowns.   “Obviously, you see what he is on the field,” Farley said. “But he’s a leader…
