Bill Jors and Derek Dobies File for Jackson Mayor

Incumbent Mayor Bill Jors will face a challenger in the November General Election.  Council member Derek Dobies filed petitions to run for Mayor.  The City Clerk certified both filing affidavits of Jors and Dobies.  As the deadline for filing for office has passed, there are no other mayoral candidates and there will be no primary. Eight candidates have filed for council seats, including all three incumbents.  Only First Ward incumbent council member Arlene Robinson faces no opposition. They are: First Ward: Arlene Robinson (Incumbent) Third Ward: Daniel Greer (Incumbent) Andrew J. Lindley Caleb Blondke Jeromy Alexander Fifth Ward Andrew Frounfelker (Incumbent) David W. Jones Susan Murdie There will be a primary election for both the Third and Fifth ward seats to determine the two who will head on to the General Election in November.  Council member terms are four years.  Wards 2, 4 and 6 council members terms end in 2019.

Major Construction Project Starts Today

The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced the $13.1 million major project that includes the reconstruction of Michigan Avenue between Brown Street and Louis Glick Highway/Washington Avenue in downtown Jackson begins today. In addition, Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue, both one-way roads, will be converted to allow for two-way traffic.  Starting Wednesday, April 26, Michigan Avenue between Brown Street and Steward Avenue will have one lane open in each direction as crews start preliminary work on the project. There will also be intermittent side street closures along this stretch of Michigan Avenue for utility work.  Then, starting Wednesday, May 3, the westbound detour is scheduled to be put in place. During construction, one lane of eastbound traffic will be open on Michigan Avenue, with westbound traffic detoured using Wildwood Avenue and Brown Street. This traffic configuration will remain in place for the duration of the project. Spring Arbor finishes fourth at CL Men’s Golf Championship

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men’s golf team finished fourth at the 2017 Crossroads League Championship, held at Pine Valley Country Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana.   The Cougars were unable to make up any ground during Tuesday’s final round, posting a team score of 318 to finish with a 54-hole tournament with a 926.   For the second straight year, Taylor University won captured the tournament championship with a team score of 867 (281-293-293). A low pressure system will bring with it increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms along with locally heavy rainfall. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Tonight:  A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. South wind 11 to 16 mph. Thursday:  Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 67 by 11am, then falling to around 61 during the remainder of the day. South wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tuesday’s high temperature in Jackson was 73 at 5:30 PM, the low was 52 at 6:35 AM.  Normal high for today is 63.  The record high is 83, set in 1962. No precipitation yesterday.  Month to date:  3.43 inches. Sunrise today at 6:40 AM EDT, sunset at 8:32 PM EDT.
