Free Saturday concerts headline two weekends of memories at MIS
Candlebox, Skid Row, LOCASH (pictured above) and Thompson Square to play in Turn 3 BROOKLYN, Mich. — Fans with a ticket to the FireKeepers Casino 400 in June or the Pure Michigan 400 in August will have bonus entertainment for their weekend. All fans with a Sunday ticket will enjoy a free Saturday concert! Fans can attend the concert FREE with a Sunday admission ticket, MISCamping.com Infield or MISCamping.com APEX wristband. Multi-platinum and gold certification Candlebox along with Skid Row, best known for “I Remember You” and “18 and Life” will entertain the crowds on June 17. ACM-nominated LOCASH and International Country Stars Thompson Square will perform on August 12. NASCAR’s favorite Tim Dugger will lead off the entertainment in both June and August. “We are excited to add these free Saturday concerts for our fans,” track President Rick Brenner said. “It adds to the enhanced week-long entertainment we have planned this summer for all our guests.” The concert will take place behind Turn 3. All activities will start after the NASCAR XFINITY Series race on June 17 and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series LTi Printing 200 race on August 12.
$12,000 in scholarships awarded to local high school seniors by MIS Cares
In four years MIS Cares has awarded $36,000 in scholarships BROOKLYN, Mich. —MIS Cares presented $1,000 scholarships to 12 students from Lenawee and Jackson Counties to further their education. The scholarships are part of an ongoing initiative to promote learning among students at all educational levels by MIS Cares and Michigan International Speedway. The scholarship was open to any graduating senior in Jackson or Lenawee County who is entering a STEAM-related (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) field at a college, university or trade school in the state of Michigan. County, Township and School Proposals on May 2 Ballot
Jackson County voters will be presented with a millage renewal request for special education funding and a new millage proposal for mental health services at the May Consolidated Election on Tuesday, May 2. Voters in Blackman, Spring Arbor and Grass Lake Townships and Hanover-Horton and Jonesville (which extends into Jackson County) School Districts will also have proposals to consider. The Jackson County Intermediate School District will be asking voters to renew a 1.55 millage for the purpose of providing funds for the education of students with a disability. The term of the renewal is six years and would raise approximately $6,700,000 annually. This is a renewal of a millage that will expire with the 2017 tax levy and will not be a tax increase. Voters in both Jackson and Hillsdale Counties will be presented with a first-ever millage request for mental health services funding. The request, initiated by LifeWays, is for 0.50 mills for ten years. If approved, the millage will raise $2,000,158 annually. According to LifeWays CEO Maribeth Leonard, millage funds will not replace or reduce the amount of state funds, but rather, will provide critical programming and services that are already reduced, missing or discontinued. “With approval, funding…

Jackson College to Celebrate Commencement May 6
Jackson College commencement exercises will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6 in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center, on Central Campus. Students completing their graduation requirements in fall 2016, winter or spring 2017 semesters are invited to participate in commencement. Jackson College has more than 600 eligible graduates this year. This commencement will see the graduation of Jackson College’s first bachelor’s degree candidate, Rose Isaacson of Jackson, who will receive a Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Management. Congratulations to those graduates completing their degrees and certificates! The program will include comments from President Dr. Daniel J. Phelan, presentation of the Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Jon Lake, the Distinguished Service Award to Bart and Karen Hawley, and comments from class representative, graduate Laurie Sexton of Jackson. Sexton is completing her Associate in Arts and Associate in Applied Science – Graphic Design. After graduation, she plans to continue working as a marketing specialist at Automated Logistics Systems in Jackson, where she began as an intern and now works full-time. She has been involved with Student Government and played in the Jackson Community Concert Band, in addition to her classes. …
