Cloudy with Scattered Showers

A weak cold front will pass through the area today from south to north with an area of showers and possibly a few afternoon thunderstorms. Behind that front high pressure moves over the area and only slowly moves eastward, so it will impact our weather into Thursday. Beyond that system tries to develop over the central plains and moves into the Great Lakes by Friday. This will bring showers and thunderstorms back into the area. Afternoon high temperatures and overnight lows will warm some each day into mid week. Today:  Patchy fog until midday. Partly sunny with a chance of rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 70s. Light winds becoming north 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 40 percent. Tonight:  Mostly clear. Patchy fog overnight. Lows in the lower 50s. Light winds. Events of Monday, August 7, 2017

The Jackson County Fair presents Senior Citizen Day.  Ages 65 and over receive free gate admission.  Monday is Pay-One-Price Day, with ride bracelets at $25.  Events today include swine and draft horse judging at 9am, a Senior Program at 11am on the Herman Gumper stage.  South Central Woodcarvers at 11 am and 6pm.  Elvis Tribute with Matt King at 11:30 am and 5pm.  Tonight’s Grandstand show is Stone Sour, Skillet and Alter Bridge.  Tickets are $33, $44, and $64.  Hospitality Tent opens at 6pm, Grandstand show at 7pm.  Rides begin at 2pm each day. Yoga at Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library.  Every Monday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and Friday at 8:30 am.  Join Yoga instructor Jeanette Lamphere and learn the basics of yoga.  Suggested donation $3. Intended for adults.  The Spring Arbor Branch of the Jackson District Library invites you to join attend the Just Desserts Book Club on Monday, August 7 at 12 p.m. to discuss Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Intended for adults.  Located at the Spring Arbor Branch.  The City of Jackson Summer Playground Experience continues today and runs through Thursday, 10am to 4:30pm.  The Recreation Department hosts an organized and supervised program at Cascades School (1200 S. Wisner) and Kiwanis Park (1521 Blakely). …

Emily Downs, Clair Brown Selected as Winners in Weekend Rose Pageants

The Jackson County Rose Festival crowned two new Queens this weekend:  Emily Downs was the winner of the 2017 Miss Jackson County RoseQueen Scholarship Pageant Saturday night and Clair Brown won the Miss Jackson County Teen USA Pageant Friday night. Both pageants, held at Western High School were well attended with boisterous audiences cheering on their favorite contestants.  In the RoseQueen Pageant, ten young women competed in interview, swimsuit, evening gown, platform statement and talent competitions.  Interviews, conducted in the afternoon by the panel of judges, accounted for 35% of the scoring. Emily Downs, a student at Jackson College and graduate of Western High School, will serve as 2017 Miss Jackson County RoseQueen.  Her reign will culminate with the Miss Michigan USA pageant in September, 2018 in Port Huron.  Emily’s platform issue is “Helping Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” and the talent she performed was an archery demonstration. While giving up her crown, 2016 RoseQueen Ashley Sierminski will compete in the Miss Michigan USA pageant next month.  Ashley previewed her gown for the state competition and shared a farewell during Saturday night’s pageant…

Cloudy with Scattered Showers

Expect considerable cloudiness today with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. These will be mostly this afternoon into the early evening as an area associated with a surface trough and upper air disturbance move through the area. A weak but broad surface highs follows the trough and will be over our area into mid week, moving only slowly to the east.   Temperatures will be below normal today into Tuesday then there will be a slow moderating trend. Today:  A chance of showers before 11am, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Tonight:  A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 2am. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 55. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Monday:  A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Areas of fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Summer Weather Returns

The weather system that brought early fall like weather to Jackson on Friday has moved out of the way that will allow a high high pressure system to pass south of this area today. Even so, there should be considerable sunshine with afternoon temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. A wave on the front to our south will pass south of the area Sunday into Monday. This will bring the risk of showers Sunday into Monday but most locations will see little if any rainfall even so. Another large surface high moves in for Tuesday through Wednesday for another period of sunshine and near normal temperatures. Today:  A 30 percent chance of showers after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. West northwest wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Tonight:  Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph.
