MIS to Host 16th Annual “Spirit of America Blood Drive” September 11

(photo:  courtesy MIS) The Spirit of America Blood Drive will return to Michigan International Speedway and it promises to be just as memorable as past events. This marks the 16th year of the event.   To commemorate the event, the track and Michigan Blood have set a goal of 911 appointments at the 2017 Spirit of America Blood Drive. Those wanting to be part of this event can schedule a time to donate blood at www.SpiritofAmericaBloodDrive.com or by calling 1-866-MIBLOOD (642-5663). What began in 2002 as a tribute to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 has evolved into so much more. This event isn’t just a blood drive – it’s a unique opportunity for the community to honor and remember all those affected by 9/11. Since its inception in 2002, the Spirit of America Blood Drive has collected more than 10,709 blood products, potentially helping to save more than 32,127 lives. In 2016 alone 510 units were collected. Those donations alone can potentially save 1,530 lives. 73 Unit Apartment Complex Planned for Citizen Patriot Building with New 3-Story Addition

The Jackson City Council will consider entering into a development agreement at tonight’s meeting with General Capital Group of Milwaukee, WI for a residential and commercial development at the site of the former Jackson Citizen Patriot building.  The planned project includes a new three story building, 73 units of low to moderate income apartments and 4,000 square feet of commercial space.  The commercial space would be located in the former lobby and office area of the historic building. In plans presented to the city, the developer intends to build a three story structure that will connect to the back of the current building, extending north to Cortland Street and wrap around the Beffel Lighting building.  Similar to the project that relocated Consumers Energy’s corporate headquarters to the former U.S. Post Office building, the development would preserve the newspaper’s former office building.  Like the Clair Allen-designed Post Office building, the Citizen Patriot building was designed by another noted architect, Albert Kahn of Detroit.  General Capital Group plans on naming the new complex “The Albert Kahn Apartments”. Andrea Clark is this year’s inductee into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame

                                                                                             Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports Andrea Clark, who has re-written the record book in Jackson women' s golf, is this year's inductee into the Jackson Golf Hall of Fame.   Clark will become the 64th member of the hall when the induction ceremony is held at 1:30 on Sunday, September 17 at Sharp Park Golf Course.   The public is invited to the ceremony.   "Over the past decade, Andrea has dominated women's golf in Jackson like no one before," Hall of Fame chairman Gary Kalahar said." At the same time,she is respected for her sportsmanship and grace in competition. Add to that the way she has given back to the game with her involvement in tournament administration and passing on her knowledge of the game through coaching,and she clearly deserves a place in the hall of fame."   Clark joins her husband,2006 inductee Shane, to become the second husband and wife team…

Morning Showers and Thunderstorms

A cold front will be passing through the area today. Along and ahead of this cold front, a few showers and storms will be possible this morning before coming to an end this afternoon. Severe weather is not expected. Clearing will take place this afternoon, and cooler air will come in on gusty Northwest winds. The Kiwanis Summer Kids Series wraps up the summer this week with  “Smurfs - The Lost Village” at the Michigan Theatre.  Showtimes are 10am and 2pm.  Admission is $1.  Sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Jackson and Brooklyn.  Doors open one half hour before showtime. The Jackson Downtown Development Authority presents the Grand River Farmers Market, today from 8am to 2pm.  The market, featuring seasonal farmers and other vendors is at Grand River Marketplace, corner of Glick Highway and Mechanic Street in Downtown Jackson. The American Red Cross will have a Blood Drive today from 12 PM to 5:45 PM at Grass Lake United Methodist Church, 449 E. Michigan Avenue, Grass Lake. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org  LEGO Gaming and LEGO Madness comes to Jackson District Library Eastern Branch on Tuesday, August 22 from 1-4 p.m. Play some LEGO games on the XBOX, as well as classic LEGOs. Intended for kids and teens.  Jackson Recreation Department offers Water Aerobics class for adults at the Middle School at Parkside pool.  Classes are at 8:45am and 7:00pm.  Cost is $5 per class.  Classes run Monday thru Thursday through the summer. Partly Cloudy for Eclipse

Some high clouds and cumulus clouds will be around for the eclipse event this afternoon. A small chance of a few showers and storms will exist this afternoon, mainly away from Lake Michigan. Storms are expected for most areas beginning overnight tonight and Tuesday morning. Some of these could become locally strong to severe, with a heavy rain potential also in place.  Rain will gradually clear out on Tuesday behind the frontal system, with cooler air filtering in. Mostly drier and cooler weather will then be in place for the remainder of the week. A brief shower can not be ruled out, especially on Wednesday.
