JTV & Wharton Center’s WAITRESS Pie Contest | Photo Gallery

With the arrival of Broadway at Wharton Center’s “Waitress”, JTV and Wharton Center are conducting a Pie Contest.  Pie is a key ingredient to the storytelling of the show, and so Broadway at Wharton and JTV sought creative pie recipes from area bakers.  We were looking for unique pie recipes that mimic the show's whimsical pies like the "Almost Makes You Believe Again Pie" or the "Key (lime) to Happiness Pie.” JTV selected three area pie bakers as finalists to compete in our Pie Contest.  Fay Odeh from Steve’s Ranch Family Restaurant, Sharon Hazard from Grand River Brewery and Laura Davenport from Blue Julep Bakery submitted unique and creative pie recipes that were selected as finalists. All three bakers were required to create a pie using their recipe and submit the finished pie for judging.  The 3 pies were:  Fay Odeh’s “Caramel Apple Pie”, Laura Davenport’s “Getting’ Lucky in Kentucky Chocolate Pie” and Sharon Hazard’s “Spiced Pear Cranberry Pie”. The bakers presented their pies for judging this week at Grand River Brewery.  The distinguished panel of judges consisted of pie-eating experts Brian Surgener, owner of Jackson Coffee Company and Jackson Candy & Fudge Factory;  Brant Russell, Director of Food Service…

Record High Temperatures Likely Today

A roller coaster temperature swing will occur over the next 24 hours. Record or near record highs in the mid to upper 50s are expected today (Jackson’s record high for today is 55), but arctic air will quickly rush back in tonight and temperatures will plunge into the 20s.  The Friday morning commute may be slick as any standing water from rain and snow melt will freeze up. There is also a risk for some light accumulations of freezing rain and snow late tonight and early Friday. The cold air will stick around this weekend into next week with occasional snow showers. The best chance of snow is Sunday night and Monday. Today A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 4pm. Areas of fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 57. South wind around 17 mph. Tonight Rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain before 4am, then sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain between 4am and 5am, then snow showers, possibly mixed with sleet after 5am. Low around 26. South wind 13 to 16 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half…

Northwest Girls Basketball Playing Like a Contender

Ella Bontrager (photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — Ryan Carroll has a straightforward goal for the rest of the regular season. Sure, it may seem a little lofty. No doubt, it wasn’t something he envisioned when the 2017-18 season began for his Northwest girls basketball team. But things, including expectations, can change as a season takes shape. “We want to finish the regular season 19-1,” Carroll said with a rye laugh. “We feel we can compete with and beat anybody on our schedule. With that said, we have to play to our full potential every night. That’s the goal. Play our best basketball every night when we step on the floor. If we do that, we like our chances to win a conference title, a district title and then see what happens.” The laugh wasn’t so much about what he said, but more of how it would be perceived. This is Northwest, not Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day or some other power. But hey, based on what his girls have done so far, why not dream big? Following a win Tuesday night over Hastings, the Mounties were 7-1 on the season. Few games…

SAU Hoops Rolling Right Along, Ranked in Top 25

Paul Marandet on his way to 26 points vs. Bethel (photo courtesy Spring Arbor University)  By Mike Moore Staff Writer Spring Arbor — One point here and there, that’s what separated the Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team from an eighth straight victory and an oh-so-close Tuesday night at home against Bethel College. The Cougars had their chances, but in the end, fell to the No. 11-ranked team by a 63-62 final. Disappointing, to be sure, but just a bump in what has been an otherwise smooth road for SAU in the 2017-18 season. “We’re having a lot of fun right now,” coach Ryan Cottingham said. “The guys work ethic and attitude and the way they’ve played together has been excellent.” Prior to Tuesday’s loss to Bethel, SAU had won seven games in a row, now holds a 16-3 overall record and finds itself as the 16th-ranked team in the country. “This is a real unselfish team,” said Cottingham, who’s in his 19th season with the program. “They share the ball. We have great chemistry.” Speaking shortly before Tuesday’s loss, Cottingham was asked about the 16 wins in 18 games. “If you’d offered me 16-2, I thought you’d be crazy,”…
