Jackson County Cumulative Report: 589 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 31 Deaths

(July 23, 2020 12:14 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 589 positive cases (cumulative), and 31 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 13 new cases since yesterday’s report.   This is the largest single day increase since April 30 when 13 new cases were reported. The Jackson County Health Department says summer activities and a more active community are leading to an increase in positive COVID-19 numbers.  The department says they are seeing community transmission of the virus along with community members who are also asymptomatic, or silent spreaders. Health Department spokesperson Rhonda Rudolph said, “Combine summer activities which include travel, both via plane and car, dining out, visiting friends and relatives both in and out of state, or attending crowded events such as firework shows, lake parties or house parties and there are more chances for the virus to spread AND more places to contract it. We have epidemiological evidence that large indoor and outdoor activities have had outbreaks, as well as domestic travel." The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 2:45 PM Sunday, July 19, there are 1,379 confirmed positive cases at Jackson…

(July 22, 2020 5:05 PM) Jackson College’s first cohort of dental hygiene graduates ran into an unexpected ending to their educational journey, but the first class finished their requirements this summer. “We are very proud of our first graduating class,” said Pat Guenther, program director. “There is a huge demand right now for dental hygienists, especially with the COVID virus. Some hygienists that might be part of a vulnerable population are choosing to retire. This has opened up many jobs.” The recent graduates are already working because the State of Michigan is allowing health occupations the opportunity to secure temporary licensing until their board exams are available. Bentley Rupp is working at Ebeling Family Dentistry as a dental hygienist. “I have been interested in the dental field for as long as I can remember. I did Vo-Tech at the LISD Center in Adrian for dental aid and loved it. I thought about assisting but then decided to pursue dental hygiene. “I loved the program. I would definitely recommend the program to other people. It is a lot of studying and hard work, and also long days of…
