Assistance Programs Near End Dates; State Reminds Consumers to Communicate with Lenders

(July 21, 2020 10:55 AM) The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers that COVID-19-related assistance programs and forbearance periods are nearing end dates, and those who have taken advantage of these programs should resume making timely payments, if possible, or contact their lenders right away if they still need assistance. “I urge homeowners to make timely payments if they can to protect their credit, and if they can’t, to reach out to their mortgage lenders now if they are still feeling the impact of COVID-19,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Borrowers’ forgiveness agreements established earlier this year may be ending soon, but many Michigan lenders continue to offer help to those who need it.” Governor Gretchen Whitmer and DIFS launched the MiMortgage Relief Partnership in April, a cooperative agreement between more than 230 banks, credit unions and mortgage servicers in Michigan to provide mortgage relief to Michigan homeowners experiencing COVID-19 related financial hardships. These institutions have agreed to work with impacted borrowers in a number of ways, including offering a 90-day mortgage payment forbearance, allowing borrowers to reduce or delay their monthly mortgage payments, and providing relief from mortgage-related late fees and charges for up…

Gabriella Tackett selected as Administrator at Jackson Friendly Home

(July 21, 2020 10:47 AM) The Jackson Friendly Home for older women, one of the community's most venerable social-welfare institutions, has a new leader hired in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gabriella Tackett, who previously managed two housing care facilities at John Ganton’s Countryside Retirement Community in Jackson, was hired by the Friendly Home in April following an exhaustive three-month search. “Gabriella was hired not only for her experience but for her vision of what the Home could be,” said Terry Langston, Chair of the Jackson Friendly Home board. “We are excited to have her fully in this role and look forward to working with her, community members, and donors to support women in the community who need a place to live.” Langston said Tackett has responded admirably since she began her tenure during the particularly difficult circumstances of a pandemic that puts older people at particularly high risk. “She has performed very well during the pandemic, working in partnership with Carrie Good from the John George Home to ensure that our ladies and the staff are taken care of. To date, we have had no residents test positive for COVID-19 and we have continued to enforce our best…

Human Relations Commission Cancels Remaining Events

Students and families enjoy the 2019 Back to School Blast.  JTV file photo. (July 21, 2020 10:26 AM) Two longtime annual events are canceled for 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The City of Jackson Human Relations Commission (HRC) recently made the difficult decision to cancel its two remaining events for the year, the Back to School Blast and the Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast. The HRC decided to cancel the public events at their meeting on Wednesday, July 15. The Back to School Blast is an annual event that brings thousands of families to Downtown Jackson for a community resource fair, which includes free school supplies, health screenings, and connections to local resources. This year’s event was slated for Aug. 13. The Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast is an annual event that’s held in the fall. It brings together hundreds of community members for a sit-down breakfast that honors residents and leaders who have promoted diversity, inclusion and volunteerism. HRC Chairperson Cheryl Ragland says the commission will make determinations about future public events next year. “These events really help connect the HRC to the community, and canceling them was a difficult decision. But to protect public health, and…
