State Treasurer: $300 Million in Grants Available to Help First Responders, Local Governments Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

(July 8, 2020 5:05 PM) State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks today announced two new grant programs that will provide an overall total of $300 million to help first responders receive premium hazard pay and reimburse local governments for payroll costs incurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   “Our first responders and those public employees on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic are performing a critical public service for all Michiganders,” Eubanks said. “Supporting our first responders with funding is vital to keep Michigan safe. These dollars will also help our communities receive some budget relief.”     Effective immediately, eligible local units of government can apply for a grant from the First Responder Hazard Pay Premiums Program and the Public Safety and Public Health Payroll Reimbursement Program.   First Responder Hazard Pay Premiums Program The First Responder Hazard Pay Premiums Program offers $100 million to fund additional compensation for first responders. Eligible first responders performed hazardous duty or work involving physical hardship related to COVID-19.   Cities, villages, townships, counties, public airport operators and certain ambulance operators can be reimbursed up to $1,000 per eligible employee, with no single applicant receiving more than $5 million. MIS Announces Both NASCAR Races to Run August 8-9 with No Fans

(July 8, 2020 4:58 PM) NASCAR will return to Michigan International Speedway the weekend of August 7-9, it was announced today.  Over the course of the three days, NASCAR will run four races across three different series.  This includes the postponed NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400, which will be run on Saturday, August 8, as well as the scheduled NASCAR Cup Series Consumers Energy 400 on Sunday, August 9.  It will mark just the second time that NASCAR will run Cup Series races on consecutive days at the same track.  The first occurred two weeks ago, with the previously scheduled races at Pocono Raceway, Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28.  The weekend slate will also consist of a NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race (August 7) and the ARCA Menards Series VizCom 200 (August 9).  The VizCom 200 was originally scheduled for June.  The NASCAR Xfinity Series race that was scheduled for June in Michigan will been realigned to a future date on NASCAR’s 2020 schedule. Michigan Reports 610 Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 67,273

(July 8, 2020 4:52 PM) Michigan reported 610 coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 67,273. The State of Michigan is reporting 10 COVID-19-related deaths today, with the state total now at 6,015. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 7/3/2020): 52,841.  This information is updated daily at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.

Governor Whitmer Extends Water Reconnection Order Through 2020, Announces Investment in Water Assistance Program

(July 8, 2020 2:05 PM) Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer took steps to ensure families in Michigan have access to clean water for hand washing and sanitation by signing Executive Order 2020-144, which extends protections for Michigan residents who have had water service shut off through December 31, 2020.   “From day one, my administration has been focused on building a stronger Michigan by investing in people, their families, their pocketbooks and the infrastructure they rely on,” said Governor Whitmer. “As Michigan families grapple with the impacts of COVID-19 on public health and our economy, our administration is taking proactive steps to ensure that no one has to worry about having access to clean drinking water or losing power during this unprecedented crisis. Extending these protections is the right thing to do, and I remain committed to working with the legislature and our partners in the federal government to develop long-term policy solutions to make water affordable for every family in Michigan.”  After the governor's initial order on water protections was signed in late March, the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) worked to create a Restart Grant Program to help cities comply and pay for the reconnection program, starting…

Jackson County Courthouse In-person Services Begin July 13

(July 8, 2020 1:54 PM) Jackson County Courts have entered Phase 3 of the Return to Operations Plan set forth by the State Court Administrator’s Office, which will allow for in-person services beginning July 13th. Building hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a half-hour closing for lunch from 11:30 to 12:00. The courthouse will be closed on Fridays for the months of July and August, due to participation in Michigan’s Work Share Program. In order to protect the safety of the community, as well as courthouse employees, strict safety measures are being implemented. Access to the building will be limited, and in-person transactions will require a virtual “check-in” process via a smart phone and QR Code. Virtual court hearings will continue to be held to the greatest extent possible. Hearings that require in-person attendance will be strictly limited to the parties and attorneys involved on the respective case with prior permission of the assigned Judge. Health screenings will be performed upon entering the building, which will include screening questions and a temperature check.
