Michigan Reports 297 Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 66,173

(July 6, 2020 3:23 PM) Michigan reported 297 coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 66,173. The State of Michigan is reporting 3 COVID-19-related deaths today, with the state total now at 5,975.  On Sunday, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, Michigan reported no new coronavirus-related deaths. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 7/3/2020): 52,841.  This information is updated daily at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 505 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 30 Deaths

(July 6, 2020 12:02 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 505 positive cases (cumulative), and 30 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 4 new cases since yesterday’s report.  Cumulative recovered** patients (cumulative): 431 (updated weekly, as of July 3). *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category "Others" for the Michigan Statistics. **Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). Gender Number of Cases Percent Male 236 46.7% Female 269 53.3% The Age group is reported as a percentage of the total instead of the actual number.  Age - Years Percent 0 -19 5.5% 20 - 29 15.4% 30 - 39 15.2% 40 - 49 19.8% 50 - 59 17.6% 60 - 69 15.0% 70 -79 5.7% 80 5.5% Race and Ethnicity tables were added on April, 8, 2020. Improvement Authority Proposed for MLK Drive Corridor

(July 6, 2020 9:39 AM) Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies and Vice Mayor Arlene Robinson are proposing the creation of the MLK Corridor Improvement Authority.  A Corridor Improvement Authority is an economic development tool created by the State of Michigan in 2018 designed to assist communities with funding improvements in commercial corridors outside of their main downtown area.  The area proposed for the Authority is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive commercial district. A Corridor Improvement Authority allows the use of tax increment financing to make capital improvements within an established commercial district. It allows communities that already have Downtown Development Authorities to extend similar benefits to aging commercial corridors outside the DDA district or that extend through more than one municipality.   Once created, a Corridor Improvement Authority may hire a director, establish a tax increment financing plan, levy special assessments and issue revenue bonds and notes. A resolution that initiates the creation of the corridor improvement authority is going before the Jackson City Council for consideration at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 14. Red Cross Blood Drives. The The American Red Cross is now testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The antibody test used by the Red Cross is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms.  At the same time, there continues to be an urgent need for blood donations after hospital demand for blood products increased in recent weeks.
