Sen. Shirkey Unveils Senate Republican Priorities Ahead of Governor’s State of the State Address

(January 26, 2021 4:15 PM) Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, today unveiled the Senate Republican Caucus priorities, one day ahead of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address. “The Senate Republicans believe every Michigander deserves the opportunity to live and prosper in a safe, healthy community. Senate Republicans are committed to building on opportunities to give Michigan families and communities greater peace of mind about the future,” said Shirkey. The Caucus priorities announcement stated Sen. Kim LaSata, R-Bainbridge Township, Sen. Roger Victory, R-Hudsonville, and Sen. Dan Lauwers, R-Brockway Township, spearheaded the effort to survey their fellow caucus members about what senators are hearing from constituents in their districts.  “The 20 members of our caucus represent a variety of communities and constituents with different needs and concerns, but the one thing they all have in common is a desire for a healthier Michigan across all aspects of life in our state,” said Shirkey.   The Senate Republicans' priorities include three categories: Healthier Families and Communities, a Healthier Economy, and Building a Healthier Future. Michigan Reports 1,476 Coronavirus Cases Today, State Total Now 552,556

(January 26, 2021 3:47 PM) Michigan reported 1,476 coronavirus (COVID-19) positive test cases today, with the state reported total now at 552,556. Michigan is reporting 79* COVID-19-related deaths today with the state total at 14,405. *The deaths announced today includes 44 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. See cumulative data page for more information. State Cumulative Total of Recovered COVID-19 Cases (as of 1/22/21): 463,106. This information is updated Monday through Saturday at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.  Monday reports include Sunday data.

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 8,570 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 194 Deaths

(January 26, 2021 12:00 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12 PM today, there are 8,570 positive cases (cumulative), and 194 deaths (cumulative)*.     There are 36 new cases since yesterday’s report.  There is 1 less death since yesterday’s report and an explanation was not available at the time of posting. Cumulative recovered, as of January 26, 2020:  7,169** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received. The Michigan Department of Corrections is reporting as of 7:30 PM January 22, there are 4,440 confirmed positive cases at Jackson facilities and 560 confirmed positive staff cases.  MDOC positive case numbers are cumulative. As of January 20, there are 19 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19. Note:  Jackson County will post COVID-19 data daily by mid-afternoon, Monday-Saturday, keeping with the schedule established by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Jackson College Partners with Wayne State in New Equity Transfer Initiative

(January 26, 2021 11:22 AM) Jackson College announced its participation with Wayne State University in an Equity Transfer Initiative (ETI), a new effort led by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) to improve transfer success. The two-year ETI awards up to $27,500 to partnerships to increase transfer and completion for underrepresented student populations, including African American, Hispanic, adult, and first-generation learners. Focus on evidence-based strategies will help enhance completion of degrees that lead to family-sustaining wages. “I’m delighted that Jackson College is one of 16 higher education partnerships chosen nationally to participate in this project. This forward-looking project is designed to enhance the academic completion of under-represented students and ensure their successful transfer to a baccalaureate-granting institution – in our case, Wayne State University,” said Dr. Daniel J.
