(January 23, 2021 11:12 PM) Playing in its first game since Nov. 21, the Spring Arbor University women’s basketball team battled its way to a 62-59 victory over Cornerstone University on Saturday. An old-fashioned three-point play by freshman Addison Bayman with one minute remaining put SAU in front, and the Cougars would hang on for their third consecutive win. Bayman finished the game with 16 points and five assists while Teona Feldpausch registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The lead changed hands eight times on Saturday while neither team ever led by more than seven points. Spring Arbor led 42-41 with three minutes to go in the third quarter, but Cornerstone would close out the period on a 7-3 run to take a four-point advantage into the final quarter. Despite trailing for the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter, the Cougars stayed within striking distance. Down by three, 58-55, with 2:14 remaining, a bucket by Anne Marie Wright closed the gap to one. Then, with 1:05 on the clock, Bayman was fouled while driving to the basket and converted the free throw attempt…

(January 23, 2021 10:58 PM) The Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team claimed a record-breaking win over Greenville University on Saturday. The Cougars defeated the visiting Panthers 148-124, breaking the program’s single-game scoring mark of 139 set during the 1968-69 campaign. Eight SAU players reached double figures in the scoring column while four Cougars scored at least 20 points. In addition to the single-game scoring record falling, the combined score of 272 points is also a new SAU program record, besting the 268 the Cougars and Northwood scored in the 1971-72 season. Spring Arbor got off to a fast start, outscoring Greenville 25-8 in the first five minutes.  Daniel Cluster and Adam Gottschalk combined for 31 first-half points to help give SAU a 69-56 advantage at the break. After trailing by as many as 21, Greenville began to shoot its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to one, 83-82, with 15:01 remaining. The Panthers stayed within striking distance for a short stretch, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Denver Cade ignited a 15-0 run that propelled the Cougars to their fourth straight win.  Cluster led…

MDHHS Reiterates Importance of COVID-19 Testing as More Cases of B.1.1.7 Variant Detected at U-M and in Wayne County Resident

(January 23, 2021 6:14 PM) The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is emphasizing the importance of COVID-19 testing with additional cases of the variant B.1.1.7 detected in a Wayne County resident and among people associated with the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Today MDHHS identified a variant case in an adult male who lives in Wayne County through a specimen sent to the department’s Bureau of Laboratories. The laboratory also detected the variant in specimens from two adult females associated with the U-M, which previously had three B.1.1.7 cases identified. B.1.1.7 spreads more easily between people, but there has been no indication that it affects the clinical outcomes or disease severity compared to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has been circulating across the United States for months. “The new variant is present in Michigan and we are at risk of seeing more spread of COVID-19. Everyone should do their part to end this pandemic. Get tested if you have been exposed, have symptoms, or have recently traveled to an area with a new variant spreading,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health at MDHHS. “Make sure you are following all quarantine and…

(January 22, 2021 3:26 PM) Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Elizabeth Hertel as Director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Hertel currently serves as the Senior Chief Deputy Director for Administration for MDHHS, where she oversees External Relations and Communications, Finance and Administration, Legislative Services, Legal Affairs, Policy & Planning, Strategic Integration, Organizational Services, Workforce Engagement and Community and Faith Engagement. This afternoon, Michigan Department of Health & Human Services Director Robert Gordon announced his resignation via Twitter: "Today, I am resigning from the Whitmer Administration.  It's been an honor to serve alongside wonderful colleagues.  I look forward to the next chapter.” In a statement, the Governor said only that Robert Gordon has resigned from his position, and she has accepted his resignation. Gordon was not present at the Governor’s press briefing this morning at which the latest MDHHS order was announced.  The Director has been present at all previous briefings.  He was not listed in an alert to media with today’s briefing attendees. “Elizabeth Hertel has dedicated her career to protecting Michiganders’ public health, and she is uniquely prepared to lead MDHHS as we continue working together to end the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Whitmer. “She has served across multiple administrations from…

MHSAA’s Mark Uyl: Winter Sports Delayed Through February 21 by MDHHS Order

(January 22, 2021 1:31 PM)  The following statements are attributable to Mark Uyl, executive director of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, in response to today’s announcements by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) on the topics of spectators and Winter contact sports.  Governor Whitmer and MDHHS announced that sports arenas with capacities of at least 10,000 spectators may allow up to 500 to attend events. However, no additional tickets will be sold for today and Saturday’s 11-Player Football Finals at Ford Field.  “We have been planning these Finals for weeks to include immediate family, and unfortunately this isn’t a process we can adjust midstream,” Uyl said. “Distributing more tickets would put stress on those plans and Ford Field staffing, and force schools to make more hard decisions on who will be able to attend, but at the last second instead of with prior planning.” Governor Whitmer and MDHHS also announced that Winter contact sports – including MHSAA activities in girls and boys basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling – must remain non-contact through Feb. 21. The previous emergency order was set to expire at the end of January and would’ve allowed those sports to begin…
