Jackson County Sheriff Presents Department Awards

Jackson County Sheriff Deputy Kirk Carter is presented with the Star of Valor by Sheriff Gary Schuette and Undersheriff Chris Simpson. (October 15, 2021 8:20 AM) The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff held its annual awards ceremony Thursday evening at Cascades Manor.  Because of the pandemic, the event was not held last year.  Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette and Undersheriff Chris Simpson honored department members, volunteers and citizens for exemplary acts on duty, lifesaving actions, and terms of service. Deputy Kirk Carter was presented with the Sheriff’s Star of Valor.  Deputy Carter was shot twice in the line of duty in 2019 responding to a domestic dispute.  Carter previously was honored with the Police Officer’s Association of Michigan Officer of the Year award.  The Star of Valor, the department’s highest honor was presented to Carter by Sheriff Schutte for his bravery, grace under pressure and willingness to put himself in harm’s way. The award is only given in exceptional cases for someone who does an extraordinarily hazardous duty or act. Volleyball Concord tri-meet: Concord High School defeated Leslie (25-17 and 25-20) and Michigan Center (25-21 and 25-23) in a home tri-meet on Thursday. Georgia Weeks had 16 kills and 17 digs, Hadley Kettwich dished 34 assists, and Karlee Gamet finished with 10 kills and was perfect at the service line. Concord is now 17-8-1 overall following the two non-conference wins.  Bellevue 3, Jackson Christian 0: The Royals lost 25-17, 25-18, and 25-11 on the road Thursday. Caitlin Anderson had three kills and four assists and Liv Conrad finished with four digs and four aces for Jackson Christian.  Western at Bronson Quad: Western defeated Centreville (25-10, 25-16, and 25-20) but lost to Bronson (25-19, 25-17, and 25-17).  Brynn Rogers dished 39 assists, Kayda Herrick recorded 13 kills, and Hillary Griffin tallied 14 kills and five blocks for Western (21-6-1).  Lenawee Christian 3, Hanover-Horton 0: The Comets lost 25-23, 25-12, and 25-19 on Thursday. October 15 Jackson YMCA 8th annual Pink Ribbon Party.  6:00-8:00 PM.  Last Year the event was held virtually; it’s back IN PERSON at the downtown YMCA.  Cost is $10 donation, held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Proceeds benefit the Turning Point Program in Jackson.  Turning Point is for someone who was just diagnosed or is in remission from Breast Cancer.  This program was paused during COVID and the Y hopes to re-start it soon.  No need to pre-register!  JacksonYMCA.org Grand River Farmers Market.   9 am until 2 pm.  The market is full of MICHIGAN GROWN PRODUCE including fresh vegetables, fruits, organic goods, vegan cookies, muffins, granola, honey, jams, breads, pastas, jewelry, dog treats, salsas, fruit pies, sweet corn, tomatoes, hanging flower baskets, blueberries, maple syrup, chard, broccoli, peas, mums, and much more!  They are now accepting credit cards and bridge cards.  The Grand River Farmers Market is next to the Grand River Brewery. Jackson County Cumulative Report: 19,691 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 320 Deaths

(October 14, 2021 12:00 PM)  The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County.  As of 12:00 PM today, there are 19,691 positive cases (cumulative), and 320 deaths (cumulative)*.   There are 91 new cases since yesterday’s report. The Jackson County Health Department has announced a change in reporting effective Oct. 6, 2021.  Cases defined as probable will be reported in cumulative case and death counts.  As additional methods of testing besides the PCR test have become more common, the amount of cases classified as probable has increased and are included to provide a more accurate picture of disease in our community.  As of October 14, there are 40 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19.  Cumulative recovered, as of October 14: 17,594** The cumulative numbers posted on Mondays include the data from Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  Recovered numbers are being posted as received.  *These numbers do not reflect any cases or deaths identified through Michigan Department of Corrections.  Their numbers are listed under a separate category and reported by the state at Michigan Statistics. Volleyball Western 3, Hastings 0: The Panthers earned a sweep at Hastings, 25-10, 25-13, and 25-7. Finley Elder, Nicole Shellberg, and Lilli Luma each recorded five kills for Western. Hillary Griffin finished with seven aces and Sydney Kellar had six digs for Western (20-5-1 overall, 5-1 Interstate-8).  Marshall 3, Lumen Christi 0: The Redhawks swept the Titans at home in Interstate-8 Conference volleyball, 25-15, 25-15, and 25-19.   Coldwater 3, Northwest 1: The Mounties won 25-12 in game one, but were swept by the Cardinals the rest of the night. The Mounties celebrated senior night honoring Piper Darrow, Abbie Sczykutowicz, Peach Kennedy, Leah Alfred, Kenzie Rowley, and Olivia Lamb.  Soccer  Division 1 Districts Skyline 8, Jackson 0: Jackson finished the season with a 5-12-1 record following the district loss at Skyline.  Division 2 Districts Coldwater 4, Western 3: The Panthers finished the season with an 8-6 record following a loss at Coldwater. Ribbon Cutting and Open House.  Jackson School of the Arts.  You are invited to attend a ribbon cutting and open house at the new downtown home of Jackson School of the Arts.  We’d love to show you around!  The all-new beautiful Jackson School of the Arts, 135 W.
