Heart and Sole Event Raises $7,500 for Behavioral Health Services at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea

St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea today announced that the 27thAnnual "Heart & Sole" race, held last month, drew 579 participants and raised $7,500 to help fund Behavioral Health Services offered at the hospital.  The money will be used to purchase exercise equipment for patients' use in the hospital's soon-to-be renovated Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit.   "Exercise and physical activity play a vital role in the recovery of our patients," said Nancy Siegrist, director of Behavioral Health Services at St. Joe's Chelsea.  "The participants in this year's event, whether walking, running or biking, recognize the importance of good mental health.  Many participated in honor of loved ones who have experienced a mental health condition.  We thank them for their involvement and support and for bringing attention to this public health issue." Behavioral Health Services at St. Joe's provides both inpatient and outpatient services to meet the specific needs of patients and their families in Chelsea and surrounding communities in addressing the physical, psychological, and social aspects of well-being.  A Community Health Needs Assessment completed in 2015 showed that within St. Joe's service area, one in four people reported experiencing depression or some form of mental health illness within the past year.  …

Michigan Shakespeare Festival to Present Civil War Premiere

The Michigan Shakespeare Festival continues its tradition of presenting three shows in its summer season; two Shakespeare masterpieces, and one other classic or pivotal piece. This year, the non-Shakespeare piece is “The Killer Angels”, a play by Karen Tarjan’s based on the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel by Michael Shaara. “The Killer Angels” will be presented in repertory with “As You Like It” and Richard II” in both summer venues — Potter Center at Jackson College in Jackson, MI, and The Village Theatre in Canton, MI from July 9th through August 14th. The 1974 Pulitzer Prize-Winning novel by Michael Shaara tells the story of the 4 days of the Battle of Gettysburg -- from June 30, 1863, as the opposing troops moved into position through July 1, 2, and 3 when the bloodiest of Civil War battles was fought. This epic novel has been adapted by award-winning playwright Karen Tarjan, and is directed by MSF's own acclaimed Artistic Director, Janice L Blixt, for a glorious and stirring stage event which will be a Michigan theatrical premiere. Jets’ Riedel named All-American

Jackson College baseball player Jeff Riedel was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II First All-America Team. Riedel, from Cookeville, Tenn. is a sophomore outfielder who has signed to play with Oakland University next year. Riedel batted .489 this season with three home runs and 61 runs batted in. He had 21 doubles, 12 triples and 48 stolen bases in 52 attempts. He scored 69 runs and had 67 hits in 137 at bats in 43 games. He helped lead the Jets to the MCCAA Championship this season. “Jeff was a great leader for us, and he will be hard to replace,” said Rick Smith, coach. “Jeff will always be a Jet as he moves on to the next level of play.”

344 Students to Graduate Friday from Baker College

Baker College’s Jackson campus will recognize 344 graduates at a 2016 commencement ceremony at 7 p.m., Friday, June 10, Jackson High School Auditorium, 544 Wildwood Ave., Jackson. The event will include graduates who attended the Jackson and Coldwater campuses. "At Baker College, our focus is firmly fixed on providing the quality education necessary for our students to succeed in their chosen careers," said Steve Simpson, Ed.D., Baker College of Jackson president. “As they graduate and move into those careers, we commend them on achieving this milestone.” The graduation reflection speaker will be Marquee Maylum, of Holt, who will receive an associate degree in veterinary technology. Several awards will be presented to outstanding graduates at the ceremony: Business Administration Award — Thomas Pancoe, of Jackson, bachelor’s degree in business administration. Human Services Award — Bobette Morgan, of Dansville, bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Health Sciences Award — Julaine Miller, of Coldwater, associate degree medical assistant. Jackson Community Music School Announces Summer Sessions

The Jackson Community Music School will be holding an 8-week summer session starting on June 20th. In addition to private instruction in all instrument groups, the school will offering a variety of group piano classes for all ages, early childhood development classes for babies and toddlers, vocal ensemble for both students and adults, percussion and drum circle groups, and multiple classes for string players of all ages and levels. We are also holding another collaborative day-camp with the YMCA at our building with different sessions available throughout the summer. Flexible scheduling is available for private lessons. Full payment is required for any enrollment in the summer session. Three Men and a Tenor to sing national anthems at FireKeepers Casino 400

BROOKLYN, Mich. (May 24, 2016) – The Michigan a cappella vocal group Three Men and a Tenor will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” during pre-race ceremonies for the FireKeepers Casino 400 on June 12 at Michigan International Speedway.   In addition, the group will sing “Oh, Canada,” keeping with MIS tradition in recognizing its Canadian guests.   The FireKeepers Casino 400 is scheduled for 1 p.m. on June 12. Prince Tribute Highlights Juneteenth Celebration

(photo:  Phase 5, courtesy Phase 5) Jackson College invites the community to celebrate Juneteenth with a free concert featuring hits from the ‘80s with a Tribute to Prince, with the Detroit R&B band, Phase 5 and local band Airtight. Event will be held on June 18 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Riverwalk Amphitheater, downtown Jackson. Phase 5 is an electrifying Detroit band that has developed a sound of smooth jazz mixed with a slamming “in your face” style of today’s hip hop and R&B. The group is known for its flashy, well-choreographed dance moves, as well as their glittering stage attire. Phase 5 knows how to offer the audience that great performance, offering them a mixture of “Old School” and the “Motown” sounds they love to hear. They will perform favorites by the late Prince and more. Also performing will be the Jackson band Airtight, a soul and R&B group. HealthWise Event Offers Free Health Screenings

Jackson College will present the Health Wise Screening Event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3 in the Health Laboratory Center on the Jackson Central Campus. Health Wise provides an opportunity for community members to choose from a variety of health screening services available free of charge. Services to be offered include: ·         Vascular Screenings (by appointment only, call 517.990.1374, Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) ·         Blood Pressure Screening ·         Hearing Clinic with Beltone ·         Cholesterol Testing ·         EKG Screening ·         Pulmonary Function ·         Diabetic Screenings ·         Free Chair Massages After the free screenings, visitors can meet with nurse practitioner Rachel Nichols, who works in the JC Health Clinic and is nationally certified in family practice, to review results and ask any questions. Tim Daniels named Spring Arbor University Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University head men’s soccer coach Nathan Miller has announced the addition of Tim Daniels as the program’s new assistant coach.   “I’m thrilled to add Tim to our program,” said Miller. “He is going to make us better in a number of ways. He has a sharp soccer mind, is a hard worker and, most importantly, loves the players.”   Daniels joins the Cougars coaching staff after spending the past season as the first assistant at Naples High School in Naples, Florida. He owns a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) E License, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from fellow Crossroads League member Taylor University in 2015.   A Wheaton, Illinois native, Daniels was a three-year captain as a player for the Trojans, which is where the relationship between him and Miller began.
