Aspen One Hour Earns Top Honor for Customer Service

Center for Family Health Encouraging Sports Physicals

Bikes lined up at last year's CFH Giveaway (JTV file photo) Summer is a great time for parents to schedule sports physicals and annual healthy-child exams for kids, and the Center for Family Health is providing extra incentive this year. Patients aged 10 to 18 who have physicals at any CFH location in Jackson County during May, June, and July will be entered into a drawing to win a bicycle. Two bikes will be awarded each month. Physicals can be scheduled at any CFH site in and near Jackson, including school health centers that are open year-round, five days a week, at Northeast Elementary, the Middle School at Parkside, Jackson High, and R.W. Kidder Middle School. Sports physicals and well-child exams, like all Center for Family Health services, are provided to patients with or without health insurance. Patients are never turned away due to inability to pay. Bicycles to be awarded as prizes are provided at no cost to CFH through the sponsorship of Molina Healthcare and UnitedHealthcare

Registration is under way for the Jackson Masters

Registration is under way for the Jackson Masters golf tournament, to be played June 3-4 at the Country Club of Jackson. The tournament is open to Jackson County amateur golfers with a handicap index of 8.0 or lower. The field is limited to 72 golfers, with a cut to the low 25 and ties after the first round of the 36-hole stroke play event. Entry fee is $60, or $25 for high school students. Entry can be made on-line at jacksongolf.net. Entry forms are also available at the Country Club of Jackson, Arbor Hills, Cascades and Sharp Park. Entry deadline is May 31. St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea will sponsor the 28th annual Heart & Sole Run, Walk and Bike on Saturday, May 20 at Chelsea High School. Once again, 100 percent of race proceeds will benefit Behavior Health Services at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea. The race will offer several distance options for participants including a two-mile walk/run, 5k walk/run, 10k run, and 13.8-mile bike ride. All races start and finish in the Chelsea High School parking lot, located just off of Trinkle Rd. in Chelsea. Online registration for the race is currently open at www.chelseaheartandsole.org. Spring Arbor University Presents Gungor in Concert

Spring Arbor University has announced they will be presenting Gungor: One Wild Life Acoustic Tour. This show will feature husband and wife musical duo, Gungor. The concert will take place Thursday, March 30, in the White Auditorium on SAU’s Spring Arbor campus. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m. A special SAU student ticket price of $10 will be available exclusively at the campus book store and is on sale now. $20 General Admission tickets will be available at the campus bookstore as well as at iTickets.com or by calling 800.965.9324. Jackson College Automotive Program Named on of Top in the Nation

Jackson College’s automotive service technology recently gained high marks from the website Aceable.com, being named one of the top 16 automotive technology college programs in the country. The College’s automotive program prides itself on preparing students for today’s career opportunities in an industry that is constantly changing. Cars, parts, and tools allow students to enhance their practical skills. Classes are divided between lectures and hands-on, task-based practice. The College offers an associate degree and certificate programs, as well as skill sets and concentrations in automotive technology. The program is accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). “At Jackson College, our instructors are all graduates of the program; they are caring instructors who want to give back,” said Chris Kaser, instructor, automotive technology. “Our instructors are professional auto technicians teaching the classes. They work hands-on every day with what they are teaching the students.” Aceable is a drivers education organization that provides certification programs for parents and teachers to teach students how to drive.

Jackson’s “Handle With Care” to Alert Schools of Students Suffering Traumatic Events

Children and youth in Jackson County will be “handled with care” in their schools following a distressing event that requires intervention from local law enforcement officers and personnel. Collaborating to bring a program called Handle With Care to Jackson County are the entire law enforcement community, every school district in the county, Center for Family Health, Family Service and Children’s Aid, LifeWays Community Mental Health and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Jackson County office. Handle With Care was first developed in West Virginia, and provides the school with a “heads up” when a child has been identified at the scene of a traumatic event such as a house fire, a domestic violence situation, a shooting, an arrest of a family member, a drug raid or a motor vehicle accident. Police officers are prepared to look around for children when they are on scene and determine their name and where they go to school. Before school starts the next day they will make sure the school is sent a note that simply says to “Handle that particular child With Care.” The Handle With Care program was designed to help children struggling with the effects of trauma by allowing their…

Jackson College to Host Traveling Black History Museum Exhibit

Jackson College will welcome the True Black History Museum traveling exhibit to campus for one day, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. It is part of the College’s Black History Month activities. The True Black History Museum features a collection of rare and authentic artifacts, dating from the late 1700s to the 21st century. The collection was established to preserve the history of black people and to educate others of the many great contributions that black people have made to mankind. It includes more than 1,000 authentic artifacts, including original documents from historic figures such as Booker T. Washington, Mary McLeod Bethune, George Washington Carver, Rosa Parks, President Barack Obama, and many other great African-Americans. It celebrates and highlights contributions of African- Americans in the arts, sciences, sports, entertainment, education and politics. Learn more about it at www.trueblackhistory.com. United Way Honors 2016 Volunteer of the Year

The award was announced at UWJC’s annual Volunteer Reception this past week. Nearly 100 people attended the event at Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson. “Volunteering brings that special, hands-on element that’s crucial to advancing the common good in Jackson County,” said Ken Toll, President and CEO of UWJC. “We’re proud to celebrate the hundreds of volunteers who partner with United Way.” The financial impact of volunteerism in Jackson County is huge, Toll said. According to the Independent Sector, a one-hour work commitment from a single volunteer is worth $23.56. In 2015, United Way volunteers racked up 26,046 hours in Jackson County. Thus the financial value of those volunteer hours alone totaled $613,644, Toll said.
