Jackson Magazine Announces 2020 Top Teachers

(May 5, 2020 4:56 PM) Jackson Magazine has announced the winners of the 2020 Top Teacher Awards. The annual awards are usually presented at a banquet and ceremony on Teacher Appreciation Day, May 5. Jackson Magazine has had to postpone the tenth annual awards event to a date yet to be determined. Over 100 teacher nominations were received for this year's awards. To choose the Top Teachers, a committee of educators whittled the list to the Top 10. Those 10 teachers received two classroom visits from a second committee; a third group chose the final five. The Top Teachers of 2020 are: Teacher of the Year: Marnie Hade, Northwest High School Paul Bickel, Western High School Jessica Crandell, Northwest Elementary Amber Keathley, Northwest Early Elementary Sarah Runkel, Northwest Kidder Middle School These are the other Top Teachers making it to the Top 10: Amanda Aguilera, Columbia Elementary School Lisa Ebener, Northwest Elementary Melinda Spicer, Concord Community Schools Julie Evers, Northwest High School Matthew Snell, Northwest High School In addition to recognition in the May issue of Jackson Magazine, the Top Teachers also received a total of $9,000, thanks to a partnership that began in 2014 with the Jackson Community Foundation…

Sports Provides ‘Tool Box for Life’ – Concord Baseball Coach Says

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Concord High School varsity baseball Coach Max Clark says high school sports provides a “tool box for life” for student-athletes for his football and baseball teams. The box will be a little fuller when athletics – hopefully – returns to schools following the coronavirus pandemic this fall. It may be just another lesson in life – learned off the field – for high school seniors. Concord would have been attempting to win its 10th consecutive district title in baseball this spring. Clark said the district dominance was started by longtime Coach John Ropp. “He started a tradition of taking the whole team to Florida to practice,” Clark said. “We went to Navarre Beach (in the Florida Panhandle) and had a lot of great parents who helped with the trip. “It was a great bonding trip,” Clark said. Clark said parents also played a role in the early years with student-athletes. Coaches at the Little League and other travel teams helped mold some good habits. This year’s trip…

Western High School scored just enough to upset Northwest in the Division 2 district final at NWHS on Thursday night. The Panthers tied the Mounties at 28, but won on criteria – most wins by a count of 8-6. Western joins five other area schools who will advance to regional semifinals in team wrestling on Wednesday of next week. Regional tournament winners advance to the MHSAA state team finals Feb. 28, 29 at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Also winning district titles in Division 3 were Napoleon and Onsted High Schools. The Pirates will wrestle No. 1 ranked Dundee and Onsted will wrestling Monroe Jefferson at a yet-to-be-determined site in Division 3. Springport, Manchester, and Addison won Division 4 district titles. Jackson Area Gymnastics Continues Success in SCGC

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Six area high schools make up the Jackson Area Gymnastics team. Each adds a couple of athletes to make up the team of nearly 20 athletes. So far, it has been working for Coach Marcy Miller and JAG. JAG is undefeated this season after winning a South Central Gymnastics Conference title and going undefeated a year ago. The good news for JAG is there are no seniors on the team. JAG consists of student-athletes from Grass Lake, Lumen Christi, Jackson, Northwest, Napoleon, and Concord high schools. “It would be really hard for each of these schools to find facility space and coaches,” Miller said. “A lot of these girls have been together in club gymnastics over the years.” Grass Lake junior Abi Grimm won the all-around for JAG on Thursday night in a home meet against Coldwater at Hunt Elementary School.
