Nearly 100 Local Wrestlers Qualify for Regional Competitions

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 21, 2021 10:10 AM) Nearly 100 Jackson area high school wrestlers qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association individual wrestling regionals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the regionals to be held at various locations on Saturday. The top four finishers in each weight class at regionals advance to the MHSAA state finals on April 2, 3. Here are the area placers: Division 1 at Portage Northern District champions Jaylon Riggins, Jackson, 160, 1st Dale Dangler, Jackson, 189, 1st Jayson Roy, Jackson, 285, 1st Qualifiers Eric Nguyen, Jackson, 103, 3rd Caden Bayer, Jackson, 125, 4th Shaun Smith, Jackson, 189, 4th Division 1 qualifiers will wrestle at Grand Haven on Saturday. Three Area Teams Qualify for Cheer Regional

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (March 20, 2021 8:49 PM) Three area competitive cheer teams qualified for regional competitions next week by finishing in the top four at their respective district competition. Vandercook Lake, Addison, and Concord high schools qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 regional. Vandercook Lake finished second to Hudson at the Division 4 regional at home on Saturday. The Jayhawks finished with a score of 750.04. Addison finished third (706.08) and Concord was third (631.70) in the 11-team district. Hudson won the competition with a three-round total of 765.40. Napoleon placed fifth (629.8), Leslie was sixth (619.04), Lumen Christi finished ninth (556.02), Springport was 10th (518.5) and Homer placed 11th (514.86). Concord Finishes Third; Looks Forward to 2021

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 11, 2020 6:03 PM) The Concord High School boys’ varsity cross country team finished third in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state finals on Saturday. While most teams would be ecstatic about that finish, the Yellow Jackets may look back and say what if. Carson City-Crystal won the Division 4 title with 157 points, CHS was third with 166. The average for teams winning state cross country titles in Michigan the last two years is 88 points. Teams are scored by individual finishes – first place equals one point, second place equals 2, etc. – and teams attempt to score the lowest point. A total of 157 is the highest winning score since 2013 when Highland-Milford scored 165. “A couple of our runners ran awesome, some didn’t … wasn’t our day,” Coach David Jordon said. “You have to all run well on the same day to win a state title. “Carson City-Crystal ran well.” Jonathan Mikovits and Joe Bulko finished in the top 30 for the Yellow Jackets, earning all-state honors. Concord’s Thompson Feels Joy in Cross Country Team

Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 9, 2020 8:02 PM) Concord High School runner Skylar Thompson has nearly done it all in the world of high school racing. She has been all-state in both cross country and track, has medaled as an individual and as part of a team, and has scored a number of points at state meets. Saturday she did something that few runners ever achieve, Thompson was all-state in cross country for a fourth consecutive season. But her biggest joy came from running with four other teammates. Concord finished 18th as a team in the 27-team Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 team event at Michigan International Speedway on a balmy afternoon. Temperatures were in the high 60s and low 70s most of the day. Thompson finished 23rd overall in 20 minutes, 53 seconds, earning her fourth all-state medal in cross country. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 7, 2020 7:11 PM) Ten high school cross country runners finished in the top 30 in their respective races at the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. The top 30 in each division earn all-state honors. COVID-19 restrictions split the divisions into two races – one with teams who finished first or second in their respective regional races and another for the third-place teams at regionals and individual qualifiers. The MHSAA was trying to limit the number of athletes in each race. Fans were also restricted to the grandstands, items like tents (where people would congregate) were banned, and teams had a checkout and check-in times.
