Sandoval Wins D-2 Race at Springport

Grass Lake High School cross country runner Kailee Sandoval earned first place in the Division 2 race at the Springport Invitational on Wednesday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports While most runners put an emphasis on the number of miles ran over the summer, Grass Lake High School cross country runner Kailee Sandoval spent time in the weight room. And it has paid off for the junior. Sandoval won the girls’ Division 2 race at the Springport Invitational Wednesday at Springport High School. She ran the 5,000-meter course in just under 20 minutes. She wasn’t the only winner at the annual invitational that attracts a number of Jackson County schools. Hanover-Horton easily won the Division 1 boys’ race with 24 points and Concord won the boys’ Division 3 race with 34 points. Sandoval suffered a hamstring injury during the track and field season earlier in the year. She was only able to compete in three track meets last spring. “In the back of my mind, the injury has been motivation for me,” Sandoval said. “The injury has taught me to run every race like it is your last.” Sandoval said she used weight training and…

Martin Breaks Longstanding Record at Concord Classic

Nathan Martin, in front, led the Concord Classic 5K Run from start to finish with an event record of 14 minutes, 32 seconds.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Those in attendance Wednesday at the Concord Classic 5K Run/Walk had an opportunity to see a potential United States Olympic competitor. Competitors in the 5K run saw Nathan Martin for about 90 seconds. Martin took off to start the race and set a new Concord Classic record in the process. The Spring Arbor University graduate and Olympic hopeful ran the 5K course in 14 minutes, 32 seconds to break the longstanding record of 14:49 set by Duane Daugherty in the mid-1980s. Martin was one of more than 210 who participated in the 30th annual event in Concord. Race organizer David Jordon said the fundraiser for the school’s cross country team had been drawing less runners each year. The race may have found its niche as a mid-week race. “On any given Saturday there are 60 races within the area,” Jordon said. “Our numbers have been dropping the last three or four years. “Why drive all the way to Concord if you have a local race…

Slater “Keeps on Movin'” with Help of ORS

Orthopaedic Rehab Specialist employee Marcy Shepherd, left, walks with Margie Slater during the Concord Classic 5K Run/Walk on Wednesday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Long after the trophies were handed out, the course was disbanded, and most everyone went home, Vandercook Lake resident Margie Slater crossed the finish line at the Concord Classic 5K Run/Walk on Wednesday night. For the 78-year-old walker, she has only one goal – keep on moving. Slater was one of more than 200 athletes who competed in the 30th annual Concord Classic Wednesday night. The event was moved to midweek according to race organizer David Jordon due to “dwindling numbers.” It paid off for the cross country fundraiser as the number of participants was up by more than one-third. “On any given Saturday there are 60 races within the area,” Jordon said. “Our numbers have been dropping the last three or four years. “Why drive all the way to Concord if you have a local race in your area?” The change paid off for the organizing committee with more runners/walkers – with one of those finishing in just over two hours. Slater was competing in her 25th 5K…

Bargesser Steals the Show at D-3 State Track, Field Finals

Lexus Bargesser, lane six, of Grass Lake High School won the 100- and 200-meter dash events at the MHSAA track and field finals Saturday at Jenison High School.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Perhaps aptly named, Lexus Bargesser of Grass Lake High School was in pursuit of perfection on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 track and field championships at Jenison High School. The freshman stole the show winning the 100 and 200-meter dash events on a stormy Saturday near Grand Rapids. The state meet was delayed at least three times for thunder and lightning in the area. Bargesser was a bolt of lightning in winning the 100 in 12.56 seconds – a personal best – and the 200 with a time of 25.43 – also her best time ever. She was one of a number of Jackson County athletes who earned medals and all-state honors finishing in the top eight in his/her events. Bargesser was seeded third heading into the 100 final, but got out of blocks quickly and held off fellow Cascades Conference runner Jayden Humphrey of Manchester at the end. “Jayden and I have gone back and…
