Chucky’s Week 4 Game Picks

Chucky is excited this week on a couple of fronts. First, he went 9-2 (or something like that) last week and feels he’s trending upward. Second, he really likes being able to say things like ‘trending upward.’ Also, he engaged in a really heated battle with his own tail. Columbia Central @ Hudson: Chucky and the Eagles were born in the same year – 1967! They also share this cool stat: Neither has ever beaten Hudson. PICK: Hudson Grass Lake @ Napoleon: The Pirates look to rattle Grass Lake fans by turning loose a swarm of angry bees just before kickoff. The plan backfires when it’s discovered the bees weren’t really angry, just sort of bored. PICK: Grass Lake Hanover-Horton @ Michigan Center: Chucky recently learned that, when a team forfeits a game (such as E. Jackson & Concord) the official score is 2-0. This means nothing here, of course, but is a darn cool tidbit. PICK: H-H Jackson @ Lansing Sexton: A controversy brews at Sexton, where smaller members of the team are angry over the school nickname of ‘Big Reds.’ A compromise is reached with the introduction of their new name – ‘The Big & Also Smaller Reds.’…

Chucky’s Week 3 Football Picks

Chucky’s week #2 record of 6-3 isn’t all that bad, folks. And he celebrated by giving himself a nice bathing, complete with uncomfortable hairballs. On to week #3, and with it success… always, success… Hillsdale @ Columbia Central: JTV’s Lisa Spampinato (of ‘In the Kitchen’ fame) tries to fire up the Eagles with a delicious pre-game pasta dish but the plan backfires when CC -now duly fed – appear quite sluggish. PICK: Hillsdale Grass Lake @ Michigan Center: Rather than risk injury, these two rivals engage in a carp catching contest at Center Lake instead of playing a football game. The plan backfires when they all turn ankles getting off the bus. PICK: Grass Lake Addison @ Hanover-Horton: Two recent cougar sightings in the Hanover area have Comet fans on edge. Everyone feels a little better when it’s revealed it wasn’t a cougar after all, but rather some form of rabid lion hell-bent on destruction. Wait, that doesn’t make sense. PICK: H-H East Lansing @ Jackson: The Vikings are excited about the possibility of a post-game celebration meal cooked by J-High assistant coach Russell Davis…Frankly, that sounds delicious.  PICK: Jackson Lumen Christi @ Harper Creek: The Titans are a little…

Chucky’s Week 2 Football Picks

Well, an 8-5 start to the season was part of Chucky’s plan all along. His goal has always been to keep the bar nice and low, which should make it easier to jump over. On to Week #2- Columbia Central @ Leslie: Chucky and all of his cat buddies will be at this battle between two ferocious bird creatures: Eagles and Blackhawks. PICK: Columbia Central Union City @ Concord: Legendary Union City alum Al Capone visits before the game. Imagine the shock when it’s later learned Al Capone never attended Union City. And he’s been dead for a number of years. PICK: Union City Addison @ Grass Lake: Missy’s Little Grass Shack announces a prime rib dinner special is available for the winning team, and the Warriors rise to the challenge and pummel Addison. They are angered, however, when they learn the prime rib dinner is not free. PICK: Grass Lake Jackson @ Lansing Everett: Someone misplaces the usual pre-game warmup music with something from The Carpenter’s. Both teams settle in for nice, long naps. PICK: Everett Charlotte @ Lumen Christi: Charlotte announces a name change before the game. They’re switching from Orioles (which are quite adorable) to Angry Birds…

Chucky’s Feeble Week 1 Game Picks

What’s new from Chucky Buckles… It’s been a good offseason for Chucky. He’s chased a few birds, nibbled a few mice and spent some quality time on top of his neighbor’s shiny, classic Mustang convertible, resulting in a series of profanity laced tirades. But the football season is back, and Chucky is excited to once again dazzle the area with his hard thought picks that most likely won’t prove accurate. Still, pick on, Chucky, pick on… Week 1 Columbia Central @ Napoleon: The Pirates, looking to get into character a bit more this year, play the game with eye patches. This messes with their depth perception, however, and the Eagles take full advantage. PICK: Columbia Central Hanover-Horton @ Concord: Chucky is certain the Comets are going to make some noise this year, so why not in week #1? Plus, the Yellow Jacket community is still excited that Concord grad Courtney Clark won the Jackson County Rose Queen pageant. Chucky is excited, too, but doesn’t see how that helps the football team. PICK: Hanover-Horton Grass Lake @ Dundee: The Beef Jerky Outlet Store is in Dundee, which really doesn’t factor into this article at all. But peppered is probably the best…

Willis Picks Michigan State

By Larry Jacobson,  JTV Sports A scholarship to play football at Michigan State University sure sounds like a lot of fun. Unless you’re Lumen Christi High School senior Khari Willis, who envisions that fun being tempered with a whole lot of hard work. “It took a lot of hard work to get to this point,” Willis said. “God has blessed me with people who have helped along the way – my family and coaches and teammates – and it’s brought me this opportunity. But I know there’s a lot of hard work ahead, too. This is another chapter in my life and I’ve very excited about it.” Willis, one of the most decorated football and basketball players to ever suit up for the Titans, enjoyed the entire recruiting process and looked at each option as its’ own unique opportunity. Still, in the end, Coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartans won out. “Throughout the process I’ve been very humbled by all of the options, because they’re all opportunities,” Willis said. “For a while I thought I’d end up in the MAC (Mid-American Conference) playing basketball or maybe in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference.) In the end I began to realize that…

Lumen Christi’s Khari Willis Named JTV Sports Player of the Year

By Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports When Lumen Christi Boys Basketball Coach Rich Karasek saw Khari Willis practicing as a freshman, he knew he was watching a unique talent. “When I saw him working out as a freshman, I knew he would be something special,” Karasek said. And Willis, JTV Sports Boys Basketball Player of the Year, is just that – even though his coach loses sight of him on the court sometimes. “There will be times when I physically can’t see him,” Karasek said. “Khari is one of the best anywhere at driving to the basket, and there are times when he’ll drive into the lane amongst all those big guys and he’ll just disappear. Then the ball goes in the basket or he passes to a teammate for an open shot and I’ll find him again.” Willis, one of the best on-ball man-to-man defensive players in the state, is the engine that drives the Titan machine. This year he averaged 14 points, almost 8 assists, 5 rebounds and nearly 3 steals a game for a Titans team that finished 23-2 with back-to-back conference and district championships. Lumen Christi spent several weeks this year as the number one ranked team…
