Comets Outlast Jayhawks in District Opener

By Derek Devine, JTV Sports Concord, MI- Hanover-Horton beat Vandercook Lake 63-48 on Mar. 3rd, to advance to the second round of the Class C District Basketball Championship at Concord High School. Even while playing “uncharacteristic” basketball, Coach Chad Mortimer and his Comets found a way to win. “We had a terrible start tonight,” Mortimer said.  “We just need to play better all game. Obviously at this stage of the season, you can’t even lose one.” Turnovers, missed rebounds and early foul trouble were all a factor in the Comet’s slow start, but Vandercook Lake couldn’t take advantage of the mistakes. Stefan Young and Brock Spink were forced to sit most of the first half, forcing others to step up and make plays. Kenzie Brockie was a huge spark for the Comets, scoring 12 of his 14 points before halftime, where Hanover-Horton led 27-19. Both teams traded baskets most of the second half until the Jayhawks made one last push in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 6. Theo Boyd, 15 points, and Will Rodgriguez, 14 points, assisted the late run for the Jayhawks. It was not enough, however, as the Comets put the game away behind Young’s…

Chucky’s District Predictions

Chucky Buckles, picker of events and things, spent a night in the hospital recently when he was attacked by some dubious ruffians who were angered by his lack of knowledge when it comes to correctly picking… well… anything. He has vowed to improve – so here goes for the boys’ tournament… CLASS A – Jackson v. Mason: The Vikings’ Michael Johnson hurt his wrist shooting all those free throws in the recent Lumen Christi game and wears a bowling brace on it during this district matchup. Sadly, he draws a technical foul for donning those goofy bowling shoes, as well. PICK: Jackson And then… After the Vikings beat Mason (confidence!) they get Grand Ledge in Round 2. That’s a toughie… PICK: Grand Ledge   CLASS B – Charlotte v. Western: On the way to the game, a Charlotte fan scales the Parma water tower and draws a mustache on the scary Panther logo up there. The Panthers, citing a ‘nobody messes with our water tower’ pledge, get even. PICK: Western And then… After the Panthers take round one, they draw Leslie in round two, and keep going… PICK: Western Olivet v. Northwest: Shocked and saddened by the Lady Mounties’ loss…

Chucky’s Game Picks

*Chuck will select a few of his favorite games each week for his picks. The holiday season is over, and with its’ end comes Chucky Buckles’ emergence from hiatus. During the break between the football and basketball seasons he took a computer class, had one of those soda-pop vending machines installed in his house and built a covered wagon from some old barn wood he found in a field. Basketball season is here, and that means Chucky is more focused on each concession stand’s popcorn making ability than the action on the court. Still, picks must be made. BOYS***   LUMEN CHRISTI @ JACKSON: Former Lions coach Jim Schwartz is on-hand to lend his services to either coach in need of in-game adjustments, but his offer to assist is rebuffed by both sides when it’s revealed that he- and the Lions – just aren’t that good. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI HOMER @ HANOVER-HORTON: The Trojans feature many of the same kids who helped the football team reach the state semifinals in November. Trouble erupts when those same kids, perhaps forgetting its basketball season, tackle the Comets’ ball carriers the first few times up the court. PICK: HANOVER-HORTON CONCORD @ VANDERCOOK LAKE:…
