Jackson County Unveils New Mobile App
Jackson County has announced the launch of a free mobile app for Android and Apple operating systems. The app provides users of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, with the ability to access the Jackson County, Michigan web site using a mobile-friendly interface. Mobile app and website visitors have the ability to subscribe to County news feeds, find bid opportunities, view County calendars and employment opportunities, make online payments, report issues such as pot holes, access County social media feeds, 211 government services and more. County Administrator Mike Overton said, "Over 50% of the County's web site visitors utilize mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The app will provide an easier way to access County information". High School spring sports are in full swing today with Varsity Baseball games at Jackson vs Charlotte at 4pm, Michigan Center hosting Leslie at 4pm, Northwest at Onsted at 4pm and Vandercook Lake at Springport at 3:45pm. In Concord, the PS Food Mart CITGO “Spirit Pump” starts today and runs through May 7th for Concord Community School Programs. Folk Oil and the Concord PS Food Mart CITGO have installed a ‘Spirit Pump’ to help raise money for the Student Activities Fund within the Concord Community School District. From April 17 – May 7, PS Food Mart CITGO will donate five cents per gallon sold from the station’s spirited fuel pump to help benefit Concord Community School students in grades K-12. Local community members are encouraged to come out and join the cause. 16th District State Senator Mike Shirley will be holding Coffee Hours at DJ’s Family Restaurant, 9008 East Market Street in Pittsford from 10:30 to 11:30am. District 16 includes the counties of Jackson, Hillsdale and Branch. Also today, the running of the world’s oldest annual marathon, the Boston Marathon, held annually on Patriots’ Day. Showers and a few embedded thunderstorms will come to an end in most areas toward mid day. The break in the rain will allow temperatures to climb into the 75 to 80 degree range, but it will be cooler near the lake. Another round of showers and storms will move over the region tonight, mainly late. This precipitation will also come to an end through the morning hours of Sunday. Major Street Construction to Begin
The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin a number of construction projects in the city of Jackson this year designed to improve safety and traffic flow through the area. The biggest of the projects, the reconstruction of West Michigan Avenue between Brown Street and Louis Glick Highway, will begin within the next two weeks once the final contract is awarded. This $13 million project will include new concrete pavement, new street lighting, storm sewer upgrades, water main replacement, sanitary sewer upgrades, traffic signal modernization and a new sidewalk on the south side of Michigan Avenue. On the north side of Michigan Avenue, a new 10 foot wide non-motorized path will be constructed. According to MDOT Engineer Jason Pittman, traffic lanes will be built to the 11 foot wide standard, a slight increase over the current lane size. The new road will occupy essentially the same footprint, but with the new non-motorized path there will be some trees removed. Many of the trees slated for removal are not in good shape and MDOT will be planting approximately 100 new trees along the street.
