Low pressure passing south of Michigan will produce areas of light snow and freezing drizzle this morning. Some roads may be slick with black ice during the morning commute. Progressively colder air will gradually filter into the region over the weekend, and highs much of next week will only be in the teens. The colder air will result in occasional lake effect snow showers with some light accumulations likely. Jackson College to Offer Bowling

Jackson College will soon offer a new sport for men and women – bowling! Jets Athletics Director Heather Bateman said the new teams have been approved and a search is underway for a coach. Plans are to start in fall 2018. Bowling teams will compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association & Michigan Community College Athletic Association. Many area high schools offer bowling teams, so offering bowling at Jackson College should be a good fit. “We hope to have a coach hired as soon as possible to start recruiting,” Bateman said.  For information on the coaching position, click here.

Michigan Avenue to Open to Two-Way Traffic Today

Starting today, Michigan Avenue in Jackson will once again be open to two-way traffic between Brown Street and Louis Glick/Washington Avenue. It is expected by early afternoon today, December 21, Michigan Avenue will be have one lane open in each direction. The roadway has been under construction since spring of this year, with only one lane of eastbound traffic maintained through the work zone and all westbound traffic detoured. After today, construction will continue along Michigan Avenue with work to convert Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue to two-way traffic. That work is expected to be complete by early spring of 2018.

JCFCU to Merge with Blue Ox Credit Union

A merger between Jackson Community Federal Credit Union and BlueOx Credit Union is moving forward after ratification by members of JCFCU on December 19, 2017.  Members of Jackson Community Federal Credit Union met last night at the Michigan Theatre to hear details of the plan and to vote on the merger.  The deal brings Jackson Community FCU's $29.2 million in assets and 4,877 members into BlueOx Credit Union.  The merger is effective January 1, 2018, with the following months serving as a transition period, as accounts are converted to the BlueOx system by April 14, 2018. “Jackson Community chose BlueOx as a merger partner after much research and consideration,” Jackson Community President/CEO, Jim Francis said.  “BlueOx Credit Union mirrors our member and community-based philosophies, and staffing strength of both institutions will be maintained.  No staff positions will be lost in the process.”    “Smaller credit unions are increasingly challenged by regulation and other operational factors,” noted BlueOx Credit Union President/CEO Fran Godfrey.  “This merger recognizes we are better together, when we align two strong, local organizations to provide tremendous value and strength to everyone.” Representing $141 million in assets, BlueOx Credit Union is a state-chartered, federally insured credit union, with membership…

The first day of winter!  Thursday's winter solstice marks the longest night of the year. The winter solstice — marking the longest night and fewest hours of daylight of the year — is today. The winter solstice is the precise moment at which the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun. A weak low pressure system tracking south of Michigan will bring areas of light snow and light freezing rain, mainly tonight and Friday.
