WSU Golfer Leads Jackson County Open

Golfer Conor Spencer watches his drive head down the fairway during the Jackson City Golf Tournament earlier in the year. Spencer shot a 71 at the Jackson County Golf Open at Cascades Golf Course on Saturday and is four shots off the pace heading into the final round on Sunday. Fellow Wayne State University golfer Grant Haefner leads the tournament following a 5-under-par 67. Play concludes today with the lead threesome teeing off at 9:36 a.m. at Cascades Golf Course.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports COVID-19 has pretty much ruined the spring and some of the summer tournaments for Wayne State University golfer Grant Haefner. When soon-to-be college teammate Conor Spencer told Haefner about the Jackson County Golf Open, he jumped at the chance. Haefner is probably happy about that decision. He shot a 5-under-par 67 to lead the County Open at Cascades Golf Course on Saturday. Multiple major golf tournament winners Mike Brockie and Mark Kurzynowski are one shot back at 68, Riley Hestwood shot a 69, Bret Valkuchak is three shots back with a 70, and Spencer shot a 71. The final round will be contested on Sunday in the medal-play tournament…

Nearly 100 OHS Seniors Graduate at MIS

Onsted High School valedictorian Kinsey Wagner holds up her diploma after graduating at Michigan International Speedway on Friday night. Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV News. By Jeff Steers JTV News Onsted Community Schools Superintendent Steve Head knew the senior class of 2020 needed a unique experience after COVID-19 cancelled some of the biggest events of the school year in March. How about a facility with nearly 80,000 seats? Nearly 100 OHS seniors graduated at Michigan International Speedway on Friday night with parents, grandparents, relatives, and siblings looking on from vehicles. COVID-19 made a regular graduation in the OHS gymnasium impossible due to restrictions. When MIS stepped up offering their facility, Onsted administrators jumped at it. “OHS graduate Jennifer Hutchinson worked with us,” Head said. “This is a special class and we knew they had to get together – in one spot – one more time.” Hutchinson works at MIS in facility rental opportunities and new business development. Students rode in a vehicle with parents and siblings while other relatives drove on the outside lane watching and videotaping. All graduates were allowed to have up to two vehicles on the track and another in pit row watching the event. The ceremony…
