Cascades Electrical Problem Forces Closure of Falls, Splash Pad

JTV file photos. (July 3, 2020 4:33 PM)  Jackson County Parks has closed Cascades Falls and the Splash Pad due to an electrical outage. County of Jackson officials are continuing to diagnose the issue to better understand what is involved with repairs, according to Christopher Bolt,  Asst. County Administrator & Managing Director, JCDOT. Bolt told JTV, “We just learned today that replacement of the underground electrical lines, transformers, and supporting connections/infrastructure is probably necessary.  Most of the existing supply lines and supporting electrical components are original, nearing 100 years old.” Unfortunately, this will not be a quick fix. “We were hoping that a relatively simple supply line repair would solve the problem - and buy us some time before investing in a comprehensive replacement project. Sadly, it looks like we will be down for awhile as we evaluate the details and get a project out to bid,” said Bolt. A meeting is being planned for Monday or Tuesday with electrical experts/engineers to go over details. The 4th of July fireworks show, originally scheduled for tonight was canceled in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sponsored by The Myers Family Little Caesars of Jackson, The Cascades presents three holiday fireworks shows…

Michigan’s New Auto Insurance Law Goes Into Effect

(July 2, 2020 4:43 PM)  New choices are now available to Michigan drivers under Michigan’s historic bipartisan auto insurance reform law, which Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed into law in 2019 and goes into effect today. “Choice is finally here for Michigan drivers,” said Governor Whitmer. “I’m proud that drivers will now have auto insurance options to better fit their insurance needs and budgets.” In May 2019, Governor Whitmer signed auto no-fault legislation to lower costs for Michigan drivers, maintain the highest coverage options in the country, and strengthen consumer protections. These changes apply to auto insurance policies issued or renewed beginning today. The new law: Offers drivers new choices on the amount of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical coverage they purchase. Mandates statewide average savings for PIP medical premiums for 8 years. Establishes new consumer protections, including prohibiting insurers from using certain non-driving factors when setting auto insurance rates. Allows uninsured drivers to get coverage without penalty for the next 18 months. “For decades, Detroit drivers have been forced to pay the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation, but that changes today,” said Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II. “This new law guarantees average statewide savings for drivers and adds protections…

MIOSHA Launches Program to Ensure Hospital Workers Have Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment

(July 2, 2020 4:33 PM) To ensure front-line hospital workers caring for and treating COVID-19 patients are receiving the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) from their employer, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has launched a state emphasis program (SEP) that will be in effect through December 31, 2020. This SEP will increase MIOSHA’s presence in hospitals to enforce the requirement to provide appropriate PPE to protect hospital staff and ensure they can continue to care for those most in need. “As Michigan continues to combat the spread of COVID-19 and protect workers, it is especially important that front-line workers coming in direct contact with this disease have the equipment to protect themselves,” COVID-19 Workplace Safety Director Sean Egan said. “MIOSHA will conduct inspections of hospitals to help ensure employees are properly outfitted with PPE and employers are following the standards put in place.” As they provide medical care to the most severe cases of COVID-19, hospital employees are at the highest risk of exposure and their employers must provide PPE to protect them. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), healthcare workers have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. As of June 24, 2020,…

Greenwood Avenue Opens; Update on Other Projects

Greenwood Avenue reopened today following completion of $2.3M project.  Photos courtesy City of Jackson. (July 2, 2020 4:15 PM)  The year-long construction project to repave Greenwood Avenue from Mason Street to Morrell Street and build a traffic circle around Austin Blair Park is complete. The scope of the project and weather delays caused this $2.3 million project to fall severely behind schedule. Drivers going through this area will now be welcomed by a new traffic circle, fresh pavement, new curbs, sidewalk ramps, sidewalks, street lights and traffic signals. Below ground, new water and sewer mains have been installed. There’s also increased pedestrian access through more pedestrian crossings and wider sidewalks. This project was started to provide increased traffic flow in and out of downtown, and provide a refreshed corridor for this neighborhood. Greenwood Avenue was plagued with potholes and hasn’t been resurfaced in decades.  Earlier today, the temporary signs and barricades were removed and the street is now open for use. Martin Luther King Jr Drive between Morrell Street and Mason Street In the past week, work has focused primarily on the installation of new water main pipe on Morrell Street between Orchard Place and Cooley Place. Tomorrow, Friday, July…
