Governor Whitmer Extends Protections for Nursing Home Residents and Staff, Grocery Store Workers
(August 10, 2020 7:04 PM) Governor Gretchen Whitmer today extended protections for Michigan’s frontline workers in grocery stores, pharmacies and long-term care facilities by signing Executive Orders 2020-168 and 2020-169. The governor’s orders extend existing safety measures, including 2 hours a week of reserved shopping time for vulnerable populations, to protect consumers and employees at grocery stores and pharmacies. “For the past five months, Michiganders have stepped up and done their part to fight COVID-19, and frontline workers in our hospitals, grocery stores, nursing homes, and more have put their own lives on the line to protect our families,” said Governor Whitmer. “Our fight is not over yet, and that is why I am extending these protections to ensure employees, residents and customers are able to work and live in a safe environment.” Executive Order 2020-169 maintains the strong infection control protocols in nursing homes the governor put in place at the outset of this crisis, and protects residents from eviction and employees from retaliatory action for staying home when exhibiting symptoms. In addition to the executive orders implementing these protections, the governor’s statement said inspectors completed 100% of infection control surveys more than two months before the federal deadline. Executive Order 2020-169 extends through September 7. In a press release, the governor noted the creation of the bipartisan Michigan Nursing Homes COVID-19…

(August 10, 2020 4:53 PM) The Jackson Symphony Orchestra announced today the cancellation of the 2020 Summer Pops Concert scheduled for August 28. In a statement, the JSO said, “Following state recommendations to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and out of concern for the well-being of our musicians, staff, and audience members, we have regretfully decided to cancel our Summer Pops concert, scheduled for August 28, 2020. Although the concert was scheduled to be at an outdoor venue, we could not safely have our musicians gather to rehearse before the concert in our inside venue.” The concert, planned for CP Federal City Square at Horace Blackman Park, was to be held in conjunction with the Downtown Development Authority August Cruise In Car Show. The DDA has not yet made a decision on whether to cancel the August and September car shows, but will make a determination at its monthly board meeting this Thursday morning. Hillsdale College, G-MAC Move Football to Spring
(August 10, 2020 4:09 PM) The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Presidents' Council has postponed the fall championship segments in football, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball, as decided on Monday morning. The conference schedule and championships in each of these high contact risk sports, as defined by the NCAA Resocialization of Collegiate Sport guidelines, will be moved to the spring season. The G-MAC is a 12-team league that plays in NCAA Division II and includes member institutions from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. Hillsdale College is the only member of the conference in Michigan and joined the league at the start of the 2017-18 school year. The Great Midwest is maintaining the cross country championship segment in the fall as originally scheduled. Additionally, engagement in all sports, including golf and tennis competition, will be permitted in the fall by institutions as they are able to meet NCAA, national, and local health and safety guidelines. Though ready and eager to facilitate intercollegiate competition in the fall for all championship segments, due to the recent mandates imposed by the NCAA Board of Governors, the Great Midwest has identified a path that best supports a meaningful season for the student-athletes in…
