State of Michigan Receives Initial Limited Supply of New Oral COVID-19 Medications

(January 7, 2022 2:52 PM) Michigan has received its first shipment of new oral medications to treat COVID-19, paxlovid and molnupiravir, following the recent emergency use authorization by the FDA. These antivirals are designed for the outpatient treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19. Both medications may only be prescribed for a patient by physicians, advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants. When administered to non-hospitalized patients within five days of symptom onset, these antivirals may reduce symptoms and the risk of hospitalizations and emergency room visits associated with the virus. In Jackson, the Center for Family Health has received a supply of this new antiviral medicine, according to CEO Molly Kaser. Kaser told JTV the Center has a very limited supply and will be following strict prescribing requirements. Henry Ford Allegiance Health announced earlier they expect to have the treatment available later in January. Due to the limited quantity of these drugs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has developed eligibility criteria and prescribing requirements for the antivirals. “The authorization of these new medications provides another important tool to help fight the virus,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “Due to limited availability of these antivirals, health care providers will…

City Asks for Resident Help in Reporting Illegal Activity in Ella Sharp Park

(January 7, 2022 2:23 PM) The City of Jackson is asking for help in protecting Ella Sharp Park from vandalism and other illegal activity. The City posted photos of recent illegal activity happening in Ella Sharp Park and is asking residents for assistance. In a press release, city officials noted Ella Sharp Park is a place where residents can exercise, enjoy nature and attend community events. But lately, City staff have noticed an increase in people using the park as a dumping ground for trash and yard waste, along with drivers damaging lawns by taking vehicles off streets. Wanting to prevent further harm to the park, the City is asking residents to be on the look-out for illegal activity and report it to police. The Parks and Recreation Department has seen an increase in damage to Ella Sharp Park over the past year. In recent months, parks staff have found large amounts of trash dumped illegally along streets in the park, including a large couch. This past fall, more than two dozen yard waste bags full of leaves were discarded in a creek. Some of the biggest damage to the park has been done by people taking large trucks off…

Jackson County Cumulative Report: 30,632 COVID-19 Positive Cases and 451 Deaths

(January 7, 2022 12:00 PM) The Jackson County Health Department released the COVID-19 positive numbers for Jackson County. As of 12:00 PM today, there are 30,632 positive cases (cumulative), and 451 deaths (cumulative)*. There are 281 new cases and 1 new death since yesterday’s report. As of January 3, there are 46 persons at Henry Ford Allegiance Health being treated as inpatients for COVID-19. The Jackson County Health Department has announced a change in reporting effective Oct. 6, 2021. Cases defined as probable will be reported in cumulative case and death counts. As additional methods of testing besides the PCR test have become more common, the amount of cases classified as probable has increased and are included to provide a more accurate picture of disease in our community. Then Ian grew to 6 feet, 7 inches tall. But the Mounties are happy with the play of Ashley on the girls’ team as she is the leading scorer and a solid contributor despite being just a sophomore. The Mounties are probably hoping for a growth spurt from Weller – who is 5-9. “I used to be better than him, but he got a lot bigger,” Weller said of her rivalry with her brother on the basketball court. The Mounties are off to a 4-2 start on the season with their only losses to Haslett (6-1) and Western (6-0). Weller scored 20 points in a win over Eaton Rapids, scoring 14 in the first half. “Everyone on the team gets along and we always look for the open person,” Weller said. “The game against Western was rough, but we will do better next time.” The Mounties will face Western at least one more time in the Interstate-8 Conference and possibly in the Division 1 girls’ basketball district at Mason. Consumers Energy Commits $4.5 Million for Energy Assistance

(January 7, 2022 10:18 AM) Consumers Energy announced it is committing $4.5 million in new assistance to help Michiganders stay safe and warm in their homes, including $1 million for this winter and $3.5 million for a pilot program for vulnerable households later this year. “Consumers Energy is committed to helping our friends and neighbors through this Michigan winter and all seasons,” said Brian Rich, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer officer. “These new dollars will enroll customers in programs that help them build brighter futures and stay safe and warm in their homes.” The $1 million will be distributed equally by the United Way of Jackson County and TrueNorth Community Services, two Michigan nonprofits with long histories of helping Consumers Energy customers. The $3.5 million contribution will establish a new pilot program for low-income households scheduled to start later this year. The program will need approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission. Consumers Energy has worked to help customers and communities in several ways, committing nearly $20 million in the last two years in assistance for households and small businesses.
