Prince Tribute Highlights Juneteenth Celebration

(photo:  Phase 5, courtesy Phase 5) Jackson College invites the community to celebrate Juneteenth with a free concert featuring hits from the ‘80s with a Tribute to Prince, with the Detroit R&B band, Phase 5 and local band Airtight. Event will be held on June 18 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Riverwalk Amphitheater, downtown Jackson. Phase 5 is an electrifying Detroit band that has developed a sound of smooth jazz mixed with a slamming “in your face” style of today’s hip hop and R&B. The group is known for its flashy, well-choreographed dance moves, as well as their glittering stage attire. Phase 5 knows how to offer the audience that great performance, offering them a mixture of “Old School” and the “Motown” sounds they love to hear. They will perform favorites by the late Prince and more. Also performing will be the Jackson band Airtight, a soul and R&B group. The Juneteenth Celebration is a free community event hosted by the Jackson College Office of Multicultural Affairs. All are welcome to attend. HealthWise Event Offers Free Health Screenings

Jackson College will present the Health Wise Screening Event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3 in the Health Laboratory Center on the Jackson Central Campus. Health Wise provides an opportunity for community members to choose from a variety of health screening services available free of charge. Services to be offered include: ·         Vascular Screenings (by appointment only, call 517.990.1374, Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) ·         Blood Pressure Screening ·         Hearing Clinic with Beltone ·         Cholesterol Testing ·         EKG Screening ·         Pulmonary Function ·         Diabetic Screenings ·         Free Chair Massages After the free screenings, visitors can meet with nurse practitioner Rachel Nichols, who works in the JC Health Clinic and is nationally certified in family practice, to review results and ask any questions. All screenings are performed by trained professionals with assistance from JC students, who are supervised. Services will be performed by allied health and nursing students, supervised by registered technologists and JC faculty. Community partners include Henry Ford Allegiance Health, Jackson Community Ambulance, Beltone Hearing and Sacred Touch Massage. Nelly & Vanilla Ice to Perform at Jackson County Fair

Hip-hop sensations Nelly and Vanilla Ice have been booked to perform at the Jackson County Fair on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 at 7 p.m. American rapper, singer, and songwriter Nelly made his debut in 2000, with his Grammy-nominated album Country Grammar, which spent five weeks at #1 on Billboard Top 200. In 2002, Nelly put his first two Grammy Awards under his belt when “Hot In Herre” broke the charts in 2002, and Nellyville went six times platinum. Beyond music, Nelly is a man of many ventures. He has created two different clothing lines, partnered with Nike to create a limited edition sneaker for the brand and is CEO of his own record label, Derrty Ent. Drive the track and take a tour at MIS

BROOKLYN, Mich. (May 11, 2016) — Fans have the opportunity to drive the high banks on the two-mile oval at Michigan International Speedway in 2016 and they can take a behind the scenes tour of the entire facility. In 2016, guests can experience both on the same day as the speedway will host track laps and track tours together. Join us on the following days: May 26 June 16 July 12 August 11 September 15 Track laps at MIS return in 2016 where fans will have the chance to drive on the two-mile racetrack. Laps will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Guests who wish to do both the track laps and track tours will be slotted to drive the track from 12:30 – 1 p.m. This will allow you to be ready for the Track Tour at 1:30 p.m. Reservations for track tours and track laps can be made by calling 800-354-1010 (no online purchases are available). Once a phone order has been placed, a ticket will be mailed to the guest in advance of their selected day. All guests are asked to use the entrance off of Brooklyn Highway. VA Ann Arbor Health Care System to Host Vietnam Era Commemoration Event

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System will host a Vietnam era Veterans Commemoration event on Friday, May 6, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to honor all Vietnam era Veterans and their families. There will be a formal opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. that will include a Presentation of Colors by the Veterans Honor Guard of Washtenaw County, comments from VA officials, and guest speaker, Lt. Col. Charles S. Kettles, a decorated Vietnam Veteran and Medal of Honor nominee. There will also be a military memorabilia exhibit provided by VFW Post 423, information about the history of the Vietnam War, live music, light refreshments, as well as resource information about various VA benefits, programs, and services including VA Healthcare, Veterans Benefits Administration, National Cemetery Administration (Great Lakes National Cemetery), and Vet Centers. Veterans Service Organizations, the Washtenaw County Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Buddy to Buddy Veteran Volunteer Program will also be available to share information. Rose Parade Details Announced; Grand Marshal Nominations Sought

The Jackson County Rose Festival is inviting the community to attend the 58th Annual Jackson County Rose Parade and Picnic in the Park on Sunday June 5th, 2016 at 1:00pm. The Picnic in the Park will commence immediately after the parade.   The parade route will begin on South Jackson and Mason St. (near Austin Park) and end at the Picnic in the Park inside Ella Sharp Park. This year’s parade theme is “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”. Part of the Jackson County Rose Parade tradition is selecting a Grand Marshal. Individuals nominated for Grand Marshal are residents who have given back to the Jackson Community through service to their city, county, state or country. There are so many Jackson residents who make a difference for this community, and it is important that our citizens have a voice in the selection of the Grand Marshal. Public Invited to Water Trail Meeting

The public is invited to provide ideas and guidance for a proposed water trail on portions of the Upper Grand River. The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 5th at the Blackman Charter Township Hall, 1990 W. Parnall Road, Jackson, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This meeting is the first step in developing a Water Trail Master Plan for the Upper Grand River and its major tributaries. The goal of the Water Trail Master Plan is to provide the framework for the future development and long-term sustainability of the proposed water trail. At the meeting, participants will be asked to help identify and prioritize the locations of existing and desired access sites and amenities, assess the degree of difficulty of various paddling routes along the river, locate potential obstacles and hazards, and identify community assets and linkages along the river. A water trail is defined as a route along a river, lake, or bay specifically designed for people using small boats like kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, etc. Water trails, sometimes called “blueways”, are the aquatic equivalent to hiking trails (or greenways).
