Lumen Christi wins City Championship with 88-80 victory over Jackson

Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports As I walked out of the Lumen Christi High School gym on Thursday night following Round 2 of the City Championship series between the Titans and Jackson High, someone up in the stands blew a whistle. How fitting… In a war of attrition with the regular season winding down, Lumen Christi capped off a season sweep of the Vikings in an 88-80 slugfest. But oh how the whistles blew… Unofficially the Titans racked up 29 fouls – including 16 in the second half – but rode a dominant 29-15 second quarter to the win and overcome a brilliant performance by Jackson’s mercurial senior forward Michael Johnson. “We don’t win this game without our second unit,” junior guard Khari Willis said. “Fouls played a role on both sides tonight and we had to adjust. Our second unit really stepped up and helped us finish this off.” A big part of that second unit is Henry Berkemeier, and not just because the junior is 6’5. With Titan big men Matt Bullinger and Demarian Snellenberger missing chunks of time in foul trouble, Berkemeier logged heavy minutes and helped man the front line. “This is what my teammates are counting…

Hogans named to All-Crossroads team

Hartford City, IN – The Crossroads Conference has released the men's basketball award winners and Spring Arbor University's Rob Hogans was named to the League's All-Crossroads team.  Hogans, who averaged over 25 points per game, seventh in the NAIA for DII schools, and first in the Crossroads League was named to the league's second team.  Hogans was the lone Cougar named. In 30 games for the Cougars this season, Hogans has tallied 755 points, and led Spring Arbor with 151 rebounds (5.0 rebounds per game. Not only did Hogans have an outstanding senior campaign, but his body of work over four years has been spectacular.  With the tournament still to come, Hogans has scored 2024 points (15.6 points per game), hit 177 3-point shots (36%), and grabbed 480 rebounds off the glass. But even with all of the impressive stats, Hogans athletic abilities have made the price of admission well worth it. His ability to elevate (42" vertical) is amazing.  Listed as a 6'1" guard from Farmington, MI, it seems almost impossible to see pictures of Hogans with his head next to the rim. Hogans and the Cougars will travel to Fort Wayne, IN tonight for a quarter-final round matchup…

The State of our Roads

Larry Jacobson     The Farlex Free Online Dictionary defines a pothole as ‘a hole formed in pavement, as by excessive use or by extremes of weather.’ It also goes on to define a crater as ‘a shallow, bowl-shaped depression formed by an explosion or by the impact of a body, such as a meteorite.’ I thought about that this morning as I swerved, dodged and swooped around gaping holes in the pavement that would rattle and knock the fenders off any vehicle built before the turn of the century. Now, I know we’ve had a terrible winter and budgets are strapped, but allow me to ask this one simple question: ‘Are you KIDDING me?’ While dining at Cottage Inn on West Michigan Avenue the other day, I watched an older model conversion van heading westbound down the hill from West Avenue. He slowed and swerved, bounced off a snow back and curb and did everything in his power to avoid the massive moon craters spread out like a minefield in front of him, until he hit one straight on. Instantly his tire exploded like a shotgun blast and the rim bent, and the poor soul had to limp his…

Chucky’s Girls District Predictions

Chucky has struggled mightily this winter with a couple of things, including the weather and his nagging inability to correctly pick winners in high school basketball games. Also, he got into a peck of trouble for gnawing on power lines for warmth. CLASS-A District at Richland Gull Lake Jackson (12-8) v. Grand Ledge (17-2):   These two have met twice this year and neither has been close, with GL winning by 19 and 20 points. In an effort to change their fortunes, the Vikings visit a spiritual healer before the game to cleanse themselves of bad thoughts. Sadly, the healer is a Grand Ledge graduate wearing a Comets jersey and this merely causes issues. PICK: GRAND LEDGE DISTRICT CHAMPION: GRAND LEDGE CLASS-B District at Olivet Charlotte (14-5) v. Western (3-16): In this first round matchup the Panthers race onto the court before the game showing off their plaque for winning the Area’s Best Student Section Award. The jubilation doesn’t carry over into the game, however, and they are quickly whisked out of the tournament. PICK: CHARLOTTE ROUND TWO- Charlotte (15-5) v. Northwest (17-2): In the second round, the Mounties receive a personal note from the Western girls that reads, in part,…

Rob Hogans reaches 2000 point milestone

MOUNT VERNON, OH – The first shot that senior Rob Hogans took was a layup only 56 seconds into his last regular season game.  But the significance of that 2-pointer was it was Hogan's 2000th point in his stellar four-year career as an SAU Cougar.  It was the first two points of a 26 point afternoon to lead Spring Arbor to a 73-64 in over MVNU. Hogans becomes the seventh player in Spring Arbor University history to reach the 2000 points in a career and now has 2024 points with at least one more game to play.  During the game, Hogans past Mike Folkert (06' – 2012 points) and now sits in sixth place on the Cougars All-Time list of scorers.  Rocky Kent (67') scored 2050 points and is fifth on the list. Spring Arbor controlled the first half of the game today leading 29-16 after the first 20 minutes of play and while MVNU cut the lead to just four points with 13:51 to play in the game, Spring Arbor pulled away and was never threatened to rest of the way. Caleb Hogans scored 12 points for the Cougars and Xavier Prather knocked down 10 points hitting some clutch…
