Women’s Cross Country finish seventh in Nationally ranked field

LANSING, MI -- On a hot and muggy Friday afternoon the Spring Arbor University women's cross country team embraced the course and competed admirably against some of the best small college competition in the State of Michigan and Indiana. Racing in only their second meet of the young season, the Lady Cougars placed seventh out of the twenty-two full teams that completed the race. Placing behind both nationally ranked NCAA division II and nationally ranked NAIA University teams at the LCC Invitational. The Cougars improved on their performance from three weeks ago and began to show evidence of the potential this young team truly has. "I was very happy with how our women's team mentally battled through the course today, honoring God and using the talents that He has blessed each one of them with," said Coach Bippes. "This was a very exciting day, anytime you can race well against nationally ranked competition is exciting!" Leading the way for the Cougars was senior, Danae Dracht with 8th place overall finish out of the 243 athletes respectfully.  Racing to a lifetime personal best; senior Christina Anderson ran under 21:00 minutes for the first time in her career finishing with a time of 20:53. The…

Chucky Buckles’ Week 6 Football Picks

The Chuck Wagon, also known as Chucky Buckles’ season of picking football winners, is back on solid ground. Two weeks ago, after a terrible 7-5 week, questions abounded as to whether or not Chucky had what it took to maintain a solid 83% (or B-) average. Then last week he charged from the gate and finished 11-1, his best week this year! But Week 6 looms and the times, as they say, ‘they are a changin’. GRASS LAKE @ MANCHESTER: Chucky toyed with picking Manchester to spring the upset here, mostly because the Flying Dutchmen nickname is really cool. Then he learned that an old, old wooden ship has never been spotted in the Manchester area, so confusion set in. Also, Grass Lake has outscored everyone not named Michigan Center 161-14 this year. That sort of wrapped it up. PICK: GRASS LAKE  JONESVILLE @ HOMER: Homer has outscored the opposition 179-13 (36-3 average) in the FIRST HALF this year! The Trojans have spent most of the second halves playing the new Grand Theft Auto game and trying not to spill energy drinks on each other. Jonesville is unbeaten as well (5-0) but the Comets had had a couple of squeakers…

Senior Spotlight: Northwest’s Drew Galloway

Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports I tried – I really did… I tried to get Northwest High School senior Drew Galloway to talk about the end of the high school football season and what might lie ahead for the Mounties: such as the school’s first football playoff berth. But try as I might, he wouldn’t budge. “We just want to keep it very simple and focused,” Galloway said. “Our goal is to be 1-0 each week- climbing just that one mountain. We have a pretty tough schedule and Coach Slater wants us only to concentrate on the next week’s opponent and the whole team has bought into that.” Galloway, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for the Mounties and a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball, did provide a little more insight. “You know, all of our goals are still intact despite these losses,” he said. “It would be awesome to make the state playoffs and the whole school and community would be excited to see it. This team would love for our legacy to be the first team to make it.” The Mounties started the year 2-0 with impressive opening victories over Hillsdale and Lansing Waverly before…

Chucky’s Week 5 Game Picks

Chucky is cloaked in impressiveness after getting back on track last weekend with another 10-2 week of picks. The quest for perfection, however, continues and this week he feels really, really good about things. Plus, he won $5 on a scratch-off. NORTHWEST @ LUMEN CHRISTI: After a pair of wins to start the season, the wheels are starting to wobble a little bit on the Mounties wagon. A match-up with Lumen Christi generally doesn’t help when this happens. Northwest invites the Titans to an all-you-can-eat pizza party at Klavon’s and schedules it for game time to throw LC off the path. The ploy doesn’t work. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI WESTERN @ LESLIE: Western lost a close one last week to Lansing Waverly, while the Blackhawks are still searching for that elusive first win. Leslie tries a little misdirection of their own by creating signs in art class to send the Panther bus through a corn maize. Western isn’t fooled. PICK: WESTERN BLISSFIELD @ COLUMBIA CENTRAL: Controversy swirls when it’s announced there’s never actually been a Golden Eagle spotted in the Brooklyn area. Blissfield is confused because they’re the Royals and, well, no one really knows what a Royal is. PICK: COLUMBIA…

Chucky’s Week 4 Game Picks

Chucky is humiliated and offers a formal apology to everyone after last week’s picks, which were far below his normal high stand of around 83% success. A 7-5 weekend has convinced him that changes need to be made, starting with picking against Springport – which he vows never to do again. So, just as the cruise ship Costa Concordia was hauled off a reef and righted once again, so to shall Chucky Buckles in his quest for pick perfection. LUMEN CHRISTI @ CHARLOTTE: Charlotte looked unstoppable in their first two games (both wins) but came back down to earth in a loss to Eaton Rapids last weekend. In a surprise move, the Orioles coaching staff invites the Akron football team in to give a pre-game pep talk. Sadly, the Zips leave without finishing the job and this carries over. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI EAST JACKSON @ VANDERCOOK LAKE: The Jayhawks surprise EJ by claiming that, in lieu of a football game, they will settle their differences in a fish-eating contest at the Bone Island Grill. By the time the Trojans realize they’ve been duped, they’ve already consumed a half ton of fish and are extremely sluggish. PICK: VANDERCOOK LAKE EATON RAPIDS…
