Michigan Center’s Drew Dowding Ready for Senior Season with the Cards

By Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports It finally hit Drew Dowding this summer. On the third day of a three-day camp in Hillsdale, he realized this would be his final football season for the Michigan Center Cardinals. “It really hit me on that final day,” Dowding said. “This is my last year and my last season. It made me pretty sad because I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve had a great high school career and I’m definitely sad to see it end.” Most of the time you don’t realize how much fun something is until it’s over or it’s gone. Drew Dowding is one of the fortunate ones, because he realizes it right now and he plans on enjoying every last moment. “I’m going to soak up every last minute of this year and keep it going as long as we can,” he said. “We have a lot of younger guys, so it’s very important that guys step up and be leaders. As a senior, I have to show the younger players how to play at this level and how to win in the Cascades Conference. If the young players are quick learners, we can have a really good season.”…

Purple Heart Recipient Named Honorary Starter of Pure Michigan 400

LANSING – U.S. Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient David Balestrino Jr. has been named honorary starter for the Pure Michigan 400 being held this Sunday, August 18, at Michigan International Speedway.  Balestrino was the winner of a fan contest on the Pure Michigan Facebook page, receiving the highest number of votes for his entry on why he wanted to wave the green flag on race day. Balestrino, of Youngstown, Ohio, served as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army from 2003-2009 and received a Purple Heart during his service in Iraq.  In his entry, Balestrino said he would like to drop the green flag in honor of his six year old son. “While serving in Iraq I missed the entire first year of Brady's life,” Balestrino said. “That was the most difficult thing I ever had to go through.  I still can't believe that I was picked for this awesome honor and I hope that I can make everyone who has served or is still serving proud.” As honorary starter, Balestrino will also have the opportunity to receive a pace car ride from NASCAR’s official pace car driver and attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers’ meeting. “We received many…

Lumen Christi Upgrading Athletic Facilities

Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports There’s a lot of excitement around Lumen Christi High School these days, and much of that stems from the culmination of a long sought dream. Titan athletic coaches and players, students, alumni, staff and parents (and anyone associated with the program, even as just a fan) have long looked at the expanse of land just west of the school and thought it would make a great location for an on-campus football stadium. Currently, the sight serves as a practice field. Now, with the roar of construction equipment, the dream is coming to fruition. “I always thought if I stuck around long enough it would get done,” Long-time Titan Head Football Coach Herb Brogan said. “It’s been a dream around here and something we’ve talked about for a long time. It’s great to see it finally happening and the whole Lumen Christi community is excited.” The varsity Titans will continue to play their home games at Withington Stadium on the campus of Jackson High School, but the new project – estimated to cost just over one million dollars - is about much more than football. “The indoor basketball court is being redone as well as the outdoor…
