Western’s Late Run Not Enough to Beat Leslie

By Derek Devine, JTV Sports Leslie defeated Western 55-44 Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Class B District Tournament at Northwest High School. Both teams started the game slowly, but Leslie found their offensive rhythm first, fueled by great interior play from Dylan Patton. Patton scored all 8 of his points in the first half. Western had a small run early in the second quarter off of second chance opportunities as Ryan Conklin was a force on the offensive glass. “Western really killed us on the offensive boards,” Leslie Coach Matt Johns said. “13 offensive rebounds according to our count - something we can’t allow to happen.” Momentum shifted completely in Leslie's favor, however, when John Jones deflected a pass and saved it from going out of bounds by passing it behind his back to Matt Subject who scored an easy layup. The Blackhawks lead the Panthers 22-15 going into the half. Western picked up the pace defensively and had 3 steals in the first four minutes of the 2nd Half, but still couldn't seem to cut the lead. The Panthers biggest push came with 5:30 to play in the game, when Isaiah Ingles hit a jumper to tie…

Comets Win Thriller in District Semifinal

(Photo by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports) By Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports Now THAT was a championship game – except it wasn’t. In the District Semifinals at Concord High School on Wednesday night, two of the best Class C teams in the state somehow met up in the second round – by random draw – and waged war for four quarters plus an overtime. In the end, in front of a packed house – and all of them standing – Hanover-Horton avenged one of their two losses on the season with a thrilling 65-61 overtime win over Homer. The Comets, in a direct contrast to the first time these teams met – when Homer won at HH 67-61 in January – controlled play throughout. Hanover-Horton led by six after one quarter, by eight at halftime and nine heading into the fourth quarter. In fact, the Comets’ lead was double digits with just over a minute remaining in regulation until Homer – led by sensational senior guard Alex White – staged a furious comeback that resulted in a 56-56 tie that forced overtime. “It’s too bad we had to play them so early in the tournament,” Comet junior forward Brock Spink said…

Comets Outlast Jayhawks in District Opener

By Derek Devine, JTV Sports Concord, MI- Hanover-Horton beat Vandercook Lake 63-48 on Mar. 3rd, to advance to the second round of the Class C District Basketball Championship at Concord High School. Even while playing “uncharacteristic” basketball, Coach Chad Mortimer and his Comets found a way to win. “We had a terrible start tonight,” Mortimer said.  “We just need to play better all game. Obviously at this stage of the season, you can’t even lose one.” Turnovers, missed rebounds and early foul trouble were all a factor in the Comet’s slow start, but Vandercook Lake couldn’t take advantage of the mistakes. Stefan Young and Brock Spink were forced to sit most of the first half, forcing others to step up and make plays. Kenzie Brockie was a huge spark for the Comets, scoring 12 of his 14 points before halftime, where Hanover-Horton led 27-19. Both teams traded baskets most of the second half until the Jayhawks made one last push in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 6. Theo Boyd, 15 points, and Will Rodgriguez, 14 points, assisted the late run for the Jayhawks. It was not enough, however, as the Comets put the game away behind Young’s…

Comets Begin Quest for 13th Straight District

By Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports ‘Memories, like the corners of my mind… Misty water colored memories of the Way We Were.’           The timeless lyrics to the Barbra Streisand classic ‘The Way We Were’ carry greater meaning for me as I get older. However, even these touching words mean little when compared to the current streak of district titles for the Hanover-Horton Comets boys basketball team. Beginning with tonight’s state tournament opener at Concord against Vandercook Lake, the Comets embark on yet another foray into the first round having won 12 straight district titles. The remarkable streak, as usual, faces stern tests. If H-H wins tonight, then powerful Homer (19-1) looms in the second round and possibly Michigan Center (13-7) for the title. With so many upsets in March Madness it’s amazing the Comets have remained so consistent. That’s a testament to Coach Chad Mortimer, his staff and system, and the Comet players. So, in honor of this streak, let’s take a look back, shall we? The Comets lost to Jonesville in a district semifinal in 2001 and back then… The price of gas was creeping up… TO $1.68 a gallon! Lebron James as a high school sophomore in Ohio…

Chucky’s District Predictions

Chucky Buckles, picker of events and things, spent a night in the hospital recently when he was attacked by some dubious ruffians who were angered by his lack of knowledge when it comes to correctly picking… well… anything. He has vowed to improve – so here goes for the boys’ tournament… CLASS A – Jackson v. Mason: The Vikings’ Michael Johnson hurt his wrist shooting all those free throws in the recent Lumen Christi game and wears a bowling brace on it during this district matchup. Sadly, he draws a technical foul for donning those goofy bowling shoes, as well. PICK: Jackson And then… After the Vikings beat Mason (confidence!) they get Grand Ledge in Round 2. That’s a toughie… PICK: Grand Ledge   CLASS B – Charlotte v. Western: On the way to the game, a Charlotte fan scales the Parma water tower and draws a mustache on the scary Panther logo up there. The Panthers, citing a ‘nobody messes with our water tower’ pledge, get even. PICK: Western And then… After the Panthers take round one, they draw Leslie in round two, and keep going… PICK: Western Olivet v. Northwest: Shocked and saddened by the Lady Mounties’ loss…
