Different Sport, Same Success for Trojans

“You can’t beat having seniors on your team…” Homer boys basketball coach Jim Huffman said this moments after the Trojans went into Hanover-Horton and handed the Comets their first loss of the season 67-61 on January 20. Although the game was tight throughout, the Trojans snagged a lead early and never let go of it, despite a flurry of Comet runs throughout the game. The Trojans (9-0 after the Hanover-Horton win) have eight seniors on the roster – including their starting five. “These guys have been playing together for awhile now,” Huffman said. “They know where they’re supposed to be on the court during games and practices, and they know where their teammates are supposed to be. They can almost coach themselves.” But there’s more to this Trojan team than toughness, poise and senior leadership on the basketball court. “I’ve had more fun coaching this team than I’ve ever had,” Huffman said. “This is just a unique group of kids and they’re just a lot of fun to be around. They know what’s expected of them, they know what’s expected of each other and they just go out and execute.” During the 2013 football season I had a…

Chucky Buckles: Investigator of Alternative Destinations

People are always asking Chucky why it’s soooo easy to defeat him when it comes to picking games. His answer is simple: Chucky’s knowledge of future events is so profound he has to hold back in order to avoid a breakdown in basic social services. NAPOLEON @ MICHIGAN CENTER (GIRLS): The Cardinals bring in former Lions coach Jim Schwartz to provide some inspiration, but he angers all the players by slapping them roughly on the back. Also, it’s reiterated that he really wasn’t that good of a coach and thus has nothing to say. PICK: MICHIGAN CENTER HANOVER-HORTON @ EAST JACKSON (GIRLS): The Comets use teams of sled dogs to make the trek east for the game but are derailed when a descendant of Balto leads the way and the entire squad ends up in Anchorage. (Google ‘Balto’ kids.) PICK: EAST JACKSON MASON @ NORTHWEST (GIRLS): The Lady Mounties play in one of the toughest conferences in the state but do so armed with delicious salted pretzels. In a new twist, Mountie staff members decide to create one big, forty foot long pretzel (rather than a bunch of smaller ones) and charge people $1 to take a bite. PICK: NORTHWEST…

Chucky’s Hoops and Hockey Picks

Chucky is seeing things a lot clearer these days. Recently outfitted with an incredibly ridiculous-looking sleep apnea machine, ‘ol Chuck is spending a lot of time in REM sleep. As a bit of a joke, his wife switched the distilled water in the machine with liquid helium. When Chucky woke up, he was floating precariously close to Cuban air space and in danger of being shot down. (1/14) JONESVILLE @ CONCORD – In order to spice things up, both teams play one-handed, while in the other hand they carry a walking taco from the concession stand. PICK: JONESVILLE MASON @ WESTERN – Mason fans are still angry over a recent prank in their fine town, when someone climbed up the water tower and painted the name ‘Perry’ in front of the word Mason. The joke was on the prankster, though, when it was later revealed no one remembered who Perry Mason was. PICK: WESTERN SPRINGPORT @ LUMEN CHRISTI (GIRLS) – The Lady Titans and Lady Spartans get together in a good, old fashioned matchup of mythical Greek Gods and some elite warriors. The Springport girls wear fake beards during the game to emulate King Leonidas. The Titans, however, are not…

Josh Collmenter and Former Teammates honored at Homer

Derek Devine, JTV Sports Homer, MI. -  High school basketball is in full swing, however, last night in Homer it was a former baseball squad and a Major League Pitcher that stole the show. Homer High School hosted a 'Tradition of Excellence' fundraiser yesterday, and the 2004 State Championship Trojan Baseball team returned to their home grounds to be honored at the event. Amongst the fourteen players to return was Josh Collmenter, current relieving pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks. “This is where I am from, these are all of the guys I grew up with. We are a family here,” said Collmenter. “I’ve been able to keep in contact with them via phone and text, but it feels great to be back and see them face to face again. We are all at different points of life, with careers and families, and it is good to be back with them and catch up. " Collmenter may be living out his childhood dream, but he is never too busy to come back to his hometown and continue to develop his relationship with the people in the community; both family and friends, as well as the great number of kids that look…

Chucky’s Game Picks

*Chuck will select a few of his favorite games each week for his picks. The holiday season is over, and with its’ end comes Chucky Buckles’ emergence from hiatus. During the break between the football and basketball seasons he took a computer class, had one of those soda-pop vending machines installed in his house and built a covered wagon from some old barn wood he found in a field. Basketball season is here, and that means Chucky is more focused on each concession stand’s popcorn making ability than the action on the court. Still, picks must be made. BOYS***   LUMEN CHRISTI @ JACKSON: Former Lions coach Jim Schwartz is on-hand to lend his services to either coach in need of in-game adjustments, but his offer to assist is rebuffed by both sides when it’s revealed that he- and the Lions – just aren’t that good. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI HOMER @ HANOVER-HORTON: The Trojans feature many of the same kids who helped the football team reach the state semifinals in November. Trouble erupts when those same kids, perhaps forgetting its basketball season, tackle the Comets’ ball carriers the first few times up the court. PICK: HANOVER-HORTON CONCORD @ VANDERCOOK LAKE:…
