Pageant Preparations in Full Swing

Rehearsals and planning for the Miss Jackson County Teen USA and Miss Jackson County RoseQueen Pageants are underway.  The two scholarship pageants will be presented the weekend of August 22 and 23 at the Western High School Performing Arts Center.  Information and tickets are available here.  Sponsor Judi Ganton, Lloyd Ganton Retirement Centers with her candidate Abby Briggs shared the details of the two pageants and invited viewers to attend.  Other guests:  Patrick Little, East Jackson Schools Superintendent;  Ray and Kelly Hines, MVP Sports Store;  Don Everett, Civil War Muster re-enactor;  Melissa Callison and Stefanie Riggs, United Way Women's Leadership Council;  Fran Adams, First United Methodist Church's "Back to School Blast, August 20.

Tibetan Monks Visit Jackson

 The Monks of Gaden Shartse Dokhang Monastery with Geshi Gyaltsen are visiting East Lansing, Jackson and Ann Arbor this week and demonstrated one of their chants being performed on their Compassion Tour; Jackson City Councilwoman Laura Schlecte;  William Patterson, Secondary Curriculum and Federal Programs Director, Jackson Public Schools;  Gary Siegrist, Dahlem;  Jackson County Rose Festival Little Miss and Little Mister Pageant Director Windy Chmiel with winners Alyson Stull, Hailey Parker, Madison Meade and Zeke Horsfall;  Sue Lovell, Pet of the Week, Cascades Humane Society.

JSO Extends Concert Series

JSO Weatherwax Concert Hall Facilities Manager and Entertainment Coordinator Steve Trosin announced several concerts have been added to the Affinity Series at the downtown venue.  On Thursday, August 14, John D. Race Week

Western Names New Basketball Coach

By Larry Jacobson JTV Sports Sometimes, even the best decisions are not easy ones. So as Ryan Mulnix steps in to lead the boys basketball program at Western High School, he does so while acknowledging it was difficult to leave behind his beloved girls team at Reading High. “It was definitely hard to leave,” Mulnix said. “I was a teacher in the system for eight years and I spent six years as girls coach, and I really think we got things rolling there in a positive direction. I’m pleased with the direction of the Reading program and I think they’re poised to continue that success.” The opportunity to take over the Western boys program was too good to pass up on a variety of fronts. “A big thing for my wife (Kellie) and I was the opportunity to be closer to home,” Mulnix said. “I’m a Springport guy and she’s from Concord, so this allowed us to move back to the area and be closer to family. The Western School System is absolutely top-notch and their new facilities are fantastic. As a coach, it’s amazing.” The Panthers began playing in a new gymnasium at the beginning of the 2013-2014 season.…

Historic Mural Receives Funding

The city of Jackson has been selected for an Arts-Based Community Development Investment, the Consumers Energy Lighted Glass Mural "Our Town" Project.  Grant Bauman, Arts & Cultural Alliance described the project as a restoration and relocation of the mural that was in the lobby of the former Consumers Energy building at 212 West Michigan.  The grant will go towards building a structure to house the sculpture in the new expanded Blackman Park.  A crowdfunding project will begin soon to cover the remaining costs.  Other guests:  State Representative Mike Shirkey;   Jackson native and author Kay Rae Chomic;  Carrie Benham, Naturalist, Dahlem;  Jim Murray, AT&T Michigan President;  Ric Walton, Walton Insurance Group.

“Dig Downtown Jackson” to Begin

Jackson City Manager Patrick Burtch and City Councilman Andrew Frounfelker announced the kick-off of "Dig Downtown Jackson", a year-long construction project on Michigan Avenue in downtown Jackson.  The project will address aging infrastructure; water mains, sewers, utilities.  The first phase begins this month in the block between Francis and Mechanic Streets.  A website has been set up to provide schedule, maps and further details here.  Other guests:  Energizing Education Coordinator Kriss Giannetti with staffers Lois Dunning and Charlie Miller;  Jackson County Parks Director Scott Robbins and Kelly Sowers, Jackson Pack N Ship;  Jim O'Brien, Hayes State Park Supervisor with Hayes Explorer Guide Kiki Dunigan;  Aubrey Febres Cordero, Brett Trombley and Kelsey Schultz; Jackson High Theatre Department's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, opening August 8 and continuing August 9 and 10 at Jackson High School.
