Khari Willis named JTV Sports Offensive Player of the Year

Story by Larry Jacobson, JTV  Sports   Shocked and disappointed was how Lumen Christi junior Khari Willis described his emotions when the Titans lost in the first round of the playoffs to Parchment this year. “It still hasn’t hit me that the season is over,” said Willis, JTV’s High School Football Offensive Player of the Year for 2013. “I was ready and prepared to be playing all through November, right up until Thanksgiving. I’m still shocked that it ended the way it did.” The end came for the Titans, for the second year in a row, in the first round of the playoffs – this time to Parchment 40-35. “We had so much fun this season – the whole team – and it was great to just be out there with the guys,” Willis said. “Even the practices… I just enjoyed being with my teammates and working with them and getting better. We had a great regular season but just didn’t get it done in the playoffs.” Getting better and better is what Willis did, starting with a 200+ yard game in the season opener at Buchanan – a game that was called at halftime due to a lightning storm…

Drew Dowding named JTV Sports Defensive Player of the Year

Story by Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports     For Drew Dowding, JTV’s 2013 High School Football Defensive Player of the Year, Michigan Center’s 8-2 record this year was ‘good, but not great.’ And while individual honors will come his way now that the season is over, the team’s fate is what matters the most to him. “It was a pretty good season, but not a great one for us,” Dowding said. “Winning a share of the Cascades Conference championship was amazing and we’re proud of that, but the year as a whole didn’t turn out like I’d hoped.” One of the most decorated football players to ever take the field for Michigan Center, Dowding’s senior season got off to a rough start when he missed practice time in August with a wrist injury. “The wrist injury slowed me down some and I had to deal with that, and then during the season I got mono (mononucleosis),” Dowding said. “It seemed like, for a while there, it was one thing after another, but you just have to push through it.” And push through it he did – to the tune of 104 total tackles (82 of them solo shots) for an…

Chucky’s Regional Final Pick

And then there was one… Chucky isn’t happy with his prediction performance this year, mostly because he’s pretty much an unhappy person by nature. As a result, he stopped keeping track and now says he never meant any of it. Still, we’re not done. DECATUR @ HOMER: Let’s see here: Lawton beat Decatur, and Homer pummeled Lawton, so that means… Not so fast, you say? These are the playoffs and crazy things happen? Not this weekend. Alex White keeps piling up impressive passing yards and those Homer lines – offensive and defensive – manhandle the Raiders. The Homer odyssey continues. Get it? PICK: HOMER MICHIGAN @ NORTHWESTERN: Well, the honeymoon is over for Brady Hoke. His first squad, which went 11-2 with Rich Rod’s players, was his high water mark. Since then it’s been losses, turnovers, doses of humiliation, getting bullied and meandering into mediocrity. Northwestern is hosting a Saturday night game and they’re wearing red, white & blue uniforms. On a positive note, Michigan’s winged helmets are still pretty cool. PICK: NORTHWESTERN BONUS PICK: MICHIGAN DOESN’T WIN ANOTHER GAME THIS SEASON. MICHIGAN STATE @ NEBRASKA: Chucky is taking a beating from Spartan fans who think their defense is as…

Carlie Newman named Crossroads League Player of the Week

HARTFORD CITY, IN – For the first time in her promising career, Carlie Newman has received the Crossroads League Player of the Week honor.  Newman was named the player of the week on the strength of her 25 point, 12 rebound performance in Saturday's 60-53 win over Rochester College. Last year, Newman was named to the Crossroads League All-Freshman and so far this season, she has no idea what a sophomore slump is.  Newman leads the Crossroads League in rebounds per game (9.3), blocks per game (1.4), and is second in points per game (22.0). Newman's leadership has guided Spring Arbor to the first 3-0 start in at least 8 seasons and the Cougars will attempt to remain unbeaten against the 16th ranked Siena Heights Saints at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Adrian, MI.
