American 1 Credit Union Offers Over $15,000 in Scholarships
Jackson, MI - American 1 Credit Union is pleased to offer over 15 scholarships valued at $1,000 each to high school seniors in Michigan through the annual Community Involvement Scholarship Program. Each student who applies for the scholarship will submit an essay, in 1,500 words or less, on the benefits of altruism and how the student has impacted his or her community through their involvement. Scholarships are funded through American 1’s Skip-a-Pay program, where credit union members can choose to skip one month’s loan payment for $25. That $25 funds the scholarship program. Kiwanis Club of Jackson Offers College Scholarships to Local High School Seniors
Jackson, Michigan — The Kiwanis Club of Jackson is now accepting applications for college scholarships. Applicants must live in Jackson County, graduate from a Jackson County high school in the spring (or be home-schooled students who live in Jackson County), and plan to attend full-time a college or university within Jackson County (Baker College-Jackson, Jackson College or Spring Arbor University). They must also show success in high school and exemplify the Kiwanis standards through extra-curricular activities and volunteer opportunities, as well as work experience if applicable. The application deadline is Friday, March 25, 2016 at 5 p.m. The Kiwanis Club of Jackson will announce the four recipients in the spring. Each will receive a one-time grant of $1,000. Ice fishing tournament moved to Wamplers Lake
BROOKLYN, Mich. - Area angler Zach Bivins just smiled when it was announced last February that the Midwest Open Ice Fishing tournament would be held at Devils Lake in 2016. “We love that lake,” Bivins said with a big grin on his face. That grin may have disappeared last Friday when it was announced that the 2016 tournament would be moved to Wamplers Lake because of poor ice conditions at Devils Lake. “Wamplers Lake is safe enough already and should be ready for the Jan. 31 event,” tournament director Tom Knutson of Knutson’s Recreation said. “We had 4 inches of ice last week.” Knutson said Wamplers Lake – unlike Devils Lake – is in a bowl and it is round in shape. “Wamplers does not have a lot of points that can separate with warm temperatures,” Knutson said. “The wind lays in a bowl and helps it freeze.” Last year Steve and Brian Romsek of the Grand Rapids area took home the top prize of $20,100 by catching 5.36 pounds of crappies and bluegills. MLK Breakfast Selects Lt. Kyle Bowman for Keynote
Michigan State Police Jackson Post Commander Lt. Kyle Bowman will deliver the keynote address at the 14th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Breakfast. The event will take place 7:30 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Gene Davis & Sons (3575 Francis Street). All are invited to this enlightening community event to celebrate, honor and reflect Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream and to motivate youth for service and excellence. The host of this event is the MLK Diversity Committee, a collaboration between the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Intermediate School District, Jackson Human Relations Commission and members of the Jackson community. First Lieutenant Kyle Bowman began his career with the Michigan State Police (MSP) in 1995. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and a master’s degree in Leadership: Homeland Security from Siena Heights University. He completed the Homeland Security Executive Leaders and Fusion Leaders Program at the Naval Post Graduate School Center for Homeland Defense in Monterrey.
